If you compared the Caps defense to the Blues defense, the Blues defense is way, way better. Was the Caps defense amazing? No. But they were just good enough to get the job done considering who they had in front of them and who they had behind them.

The same can't be said about the Leafs. The Caps had a defense that would bend but not break. The Leafs have a defense that can and most likely will break. And the Leafs don't have the luxury of the (possibly) greatest goal scorer of all-time in front of them or the absolute best goalie behind them either.

Maybe if they took some weight off Andersen's shoulders (fewer games, better back-up etc.) then maybe he could make up enough of the difference. But they don't appear to be willing to do that this year.

I'm not going to staunchly defend the Leafs defense, but I do like Muzzin and Dermott back there. I don't think much of Ceci, but hopefully against reduced competition, he can Mark Fraser it up, and be tolerable. At the start of the year, when he's paired with Rielly - buckle up.

One of the things that I think everyone here believes, and I think instead of being optimistic about it, you'd rather see it proven first - is that the Leafs do have one of the new generation's great goal scorers in Matthews. They have one of the new generation's great playmakers in Marner. They have an incredibly valuable 2-way centre in Tavares, and a great play driver in Nylander. They will generate offense from the back-end through Barrie and Rielly. I think the basis for this optimism - myself included - is that everyone of the aforementioned, save Tavares and Barrie, is still reaching their potential. They will be better.

Marlies play 76 games a season and Marchment has only played 44 each of the past 2 seasons.

Time and again i hear that the Leafs are a true Stanley Cup favourite. Poop on Kadri if you must, but a return to thirty goal form will be hard to stomach for most Leaf fans. Especially when considering the bang for the buck. So with Barrie a UFA at seasons end, there is a real possibility he's gone also. How is this not a panic trade? Kadri should have brought back a D-man with term as well as some snarl. This short term thinking will be the downfall of this GM. Hunter is still looking for work is the response of many, so obviously we made the right choice?? He should have been the man in charge in the first place. The team may have a cup under their belt already.
