The Oilers retained some of Lucic's salary didn't they?
- PatC80

Lucic and a conditional pick for Neal.

This is going to be a problem going forward. A bunch of RFAs getting paid on "potential" and "promise" and fail to deliver. However they all think they deserve a raise.

I think he should sign for 6 to 6.5 million.

- Aaron_85

My gut feeling is that it's probably easier to predict what a guy is going to do at age 22-29 than it is to predict what he's going to do from 27-34.

The internet is littered with articles about how NHL UFA signings almost always turn out to be disasters.

there's definitely a generational difference... the previous generations wanted to be rewarded for what they had done... the young guys want to get paid for what they "MIGHT" do.

- BorjeFan4Ever

So which would you rather pay for?
Big bucks to someone older who score 90pts several in a row several years ago but will quicklt age and never reach that again.
Or
Someone whos young, has score 70 - 90pts each season over a couple of season and has the potential to continue to score at that pace or better for several years to come.

yeah, so neal has lot tough miles on his body.

and he is coming off a career low season.

and may have lost a step, or 2.

and he'll be 32 in september.

and has 4 more years.

at 5.7M.

but, he wants to prove he is still an nhl player.

and he's been working out harder than he has in years.

and he has poured down a poop ton of gary roberts shakes.

i really can't see how this continues being terrible for edmonton.

If you ever look at the curve grading on a player's performance graph, there is a noticeable decline that does start around 30, usually plateau's for a couple of years, and gradually goes down again - but significantly so again around 35. The one thing that is common is that there's an uptick somewhere around 32/33.

I think it's this type of situation: The way you worked out in your 20s was hard, but after 30 it requires more effort, more attention to your diet, and more focus to get your body to where it needs to be. It requires . . .more. And that's not easy to give. But I think athletes often find a way to get there, but it's just not sustainable because every year, it's that much harder to keep your body in that shape.

So I wouldn't be surprised if Neal can find some reserves in the tank, but I'd still expect 3 of those 4 years to be pretty awful.

Great trade for Edmonton
Neal can be bought out at much lower cap hit and he doesnt need to be protected in expansion draft.
Lucic will take up a protected spot

How is that a problem. Of course you pay for potential just like you draft for potential. It’s up to the team to determine the potential value of a player and negotiate accordingly. Good teams are better at making those assessments.

Because itll lead to overpaying these guys coming off the deal. If you dont see the problem then I cant help you.

I dont think so but I give them credit for what they've done here.

Likely Kreider is moved at some point. I would be surprised if he isnt after his name being in trade talks for so long.

I don't understand. Why is the Neal buy out that much less and why would you have to protect Lucic but not Neal?

I dont know the buyout issue but Neal likely doesnt have a No trade whereas Lucic does..in the expansion, no trades have to be protected.

It has to do with the bonuses.

But no, I can't explain it.

Here is the thing....I think once a player waives his NMC it’s void for the rest of the contract....I could be wrong but I think if it’s waived once it’s gone for good

Teams assess potential and pay accordingly. If they do a good job they end up with good contracts. Obviously, past performance is a key factor in assessing potential. It’s not that tough a concept and you’re right, you probably can’t help me.

Carbo-Loading!!

I do that all the time. Not before competition, because I don't compete at anything, just all the time.
