Again. I'm not buying it.

Every player says the same thing, and it's mostly to take the heat off of them during negociations. It's pretty convenient for them and I understand why they do it.

I'm not saying they are sitting at the table. But they receive information on how things are progressing and when things don't go as planned, they discuss and adjust their views if needed.

At least that's what I think.

the level of involvement is probably different for each player.
some probably dont care and just want the agent to handle it

It's never a good sign when a player keeps saying "my agent."
- gergeswillems

He just doesnt want to comment on it, and that is the easiet way to answer questions lke that.

You may be right. Maybe it's stuck in my head. I recall when Sergei Fedorov was holding out on the Red Wings. It seemed like that's all he ever said. "My agent... Talk to my agent." He was never going to re-sign with the Red Wings. It took Carolina signing him to an offer sheet to get him back on the Red Wings.

Big difference though. Fedorov wanted out of Detroit and Marner wants to stay in Toronto.

Wouldn’t that mean the Marner camp caved?
- Steven_Seagull

Nope, I think the Marner camp is aiming for 10, asking 11. Of course they would LOVE to get 11, but when negotiating a contract, your ask is almost never what you get and agents know that. I'm surprised by this question to be honest. It's obvious that the Leafs are caving on anything 10 or over, given that they saved enough cap space to give Marner the Kucherov deal.

So the trailers for the following remakes came out on the same day.
Cats - jesus what a freak show
Jay and silent bob - typical kevin smith
Top gun - has pretty much the same scenes as the original.

Any news ideas. That dont involve superheroes?
Geez.

You're not very good at this.
Marners rights are owned by the leafs.
Oh and we let the point getting jvr leave to sign a player who scored 47 goals last year.
Psst, which was 3rd most in the league.

But good try

A friend of mine went to college in the hopes of writing scenarios of tv shows, movies, video games etc.

One of his teacher told the students that the biggest challenge they will face is that pretty much everything as been done already. More than once. And that it's almost impossible to be completely original and they needed to make peace with that fact.

He might have been right.

Marner is looking for $11-$12 Million, and teams are not will to pay + Lose 4 Firsts!

If the Marner Camp is asking for $11-$12 Million (which i believe is the case) I think the Leafs need to seriously consider trading hie rights--at some point this year. You make him sit until you find the best deal possible.

It is clearly evident why Mitch hasn't signed an offer sheet with anyone else. Its cause no team is willing to give him that much money PLUS, lose 4 1st round draft picks.

Not to mention, the Term of the deal is a big issue. Marner looking for 5 year deal, where teams (including the Leafs) would want to sign him to a longer term deal.

While I don't see the need to hate on the guy.

I'm never gonna buy that PR thing about "I'm not involved in what my agent is doing".

They are most likely communicating every step of the way and can discuss adjustments anytime.

- Scabeh

Agreed.. Marner passing it off to his agent, basically means they are of the same mind.. They both want to hold the Leafs hostage.

this also tells me that what he is asking for is just a start.

Mitchs side is going to try and use any leverage they can, and then sign a deal for around 10 or just under and we will move on

Since the Leafs cant sign him like Willie did part way into the season..Mitch has no choice here..if he wants to play..take the money

That guy took less money to try and win a Stanley cup with Tampa.

That's the kind of dedication the Leafs are missing from their players.

Trading Schenn was a mistake after all!!

Absolutely. They simply can't afford to extend beyond the start of the season. And many other teams also can't if it draws out and they trade him.

For instance:

If they sign on October 9 - one week into the season, a $9.5m contract is already a $9.8m hit this year (and $9.42m for years 2-5). Two weeks in, and that same contract becomes a $10.1m / $9.35m contract.

A $10m contract becomes $10.3m; a $10.5m contract becomes $10.8.

The nuclear option is probably that on October 23, a $10.5m contract over 5 years is still 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd in compensation, but would require $11.57m in cap space for year 1.

I just don't buy what Marner was trying to sell us, I have a hard time believing he doesn't know what's going in.

. . . to add to that, though - I still think they're at the early stages where they're trying to find common ground based on comparables and schedules (ie, using comparable 'x', we see a 2 year deal at 'x', a 3 year at 'y' . . . a 5 year at 'z'; the Leafs counter with different comparables and different schedules and price ranges).

From the lack of progress, it seems that they can't come to terms on comparables yet.

I don't think he's overly involved at this point in time. End of July going into August I'd imagine the boys start to get in gear - and that's when the talks will start to heat up. He's staying with the buds.

Is there something wrong with that? Don't you remember being 21? If your cashing in 50+ million dollar contract guaranteed - why rush? Enjoy the break! And his absolute rocket of a girlfriend

- Lucas.Neilson

The thought that he is leaving it all up to his agent is so ridiculous that I don't know how to begin addressing it.

You are free to choose to believe whatever you want.
