In light of this,

If an offer sheet is coming, it will happen when the season is underway, when the Leafs cannot match the cap hit and the compensation is not 4 firsts. This will (frank) the Leafs.

That is why he signs in or before training camp, or I think he is traded.

- Aetherial

I think so too.

Which isn’t a good situation for Marner either...CBJ already offered him an offer sheet...Marner said no.

Well when the time comes if he has to be traded Dubas is looking at CBJ with 16 million in space and an obvious desire to get Marner.

People think Marner has leverage...he has no more than the Leafs do.

If he signs an offer sheet when the season is underway, we would have 7 days to trade Nylander.

Mere speculation.

Not fact.

Lets say for the sake of argument you could get Jones. Most people think you can't, but it should be pretty close. Columbus badly needs some offense.

Are the Leafs a better team with Jones or Marner? I think it is a tough call.

OK, as long as it is just for argument's sake:

Leafs were 4th in the league in goals for last year, while they were 20th in the league in goals against.

Marner was playing all year with Tavares - an elite centre who can increase the point totals of anyone he plays with.

So you trade Marner for improved defence. Somebody slides up the depth chart on wing.

We score 15 less goals, but prevent 16 goals scored on us - so we have improved.

Just for argument's sake.

- Atomic Wedgie

But we’ve added a couple new D and need to see how’ve they fit in and possibly improve the team from last year.

Can Marner improve on his point totals and on both sides of the rink?

Why choose? Why move anyone? There’s no reason to think that we can’t have it all.

yeah but the deal will be bad with the Leafs that much under the gun.

Is he even movable?

I think elliot F said they talked to Marners side on it...and did not offer one because they wanted shorter term

I wish I knew what Bergy would do.

He holds the fate of the entire NHL in his sweaty little hands.

Why not? First round pick, RHD, played for a bad team with a lousy goalie, looking for a new start - Just forget Benning he needs his remaining $5 Million of cap space to sign Boeser.

if I am paying someone to negotiate the best deal he can get for me, and his pay also depends on how much he gets for me...well I wouldnt be too worried about it
- senstroll

I hear ya, but it’s like a realtor.

Just get’r done, the little bit extra is squat for the agent.....

We were merely playing out a hypothetical situation.

I don't think they are trading him.

But I'm bored as frank, so decided to play along "for argument's sake."

It's a good question, I'm not sure which one would make us better, I know which one we need more though.. That's Jones.

So your saying he is a stay at home defenseman who just concentrates on playing his own game?

I thought I read that CBJ talked to Marner about a 6-7 year deal and he wanted a shorter term.

There are other people you trade. They won't need an extra 6.9 to sign Marner.

I guess it depends on how long it drags on for... Dubas and Co. need to get this resolved one way or another before mid-October..

I’ll take Jones, easily. A true #1 D, and saves cap space. If they were both making the same, it’d be a lot closer.

I'm surprised more Leaf fans aren't urging the team to explore the trade route, even if the return is somewhat less than four first rounders. A combination of two A-1 prospects to go along with picks and it could be exactly what the doctor ordered for this team. Mitch Marner is a talent but let's be real, he's replaceable. Now is there a team willing to offer such a deal? Anaheim? Kase, Josh Manson, Isac Sunderstum and a pick. Or even just those three would be enough. Plus you save 4M in cap space to try and resign Barrie. Just giving Marner 10M and calling it a day doesn't seem like the best play
- Hardbalz

You can sign Marner and Barrie. Not sure why people think the Leafs have no cap room for every future year.

I would never move a Marner for a Manson. He's not good enough as a centre piece.

Landsberg's interview was Marner on TSN was slightly more entertaining than yesterdays.

I think the shorter term was zero. Like I love rural Ohio, but maybe, just maybe, I like it a tiny bit better in TO.
