I thought I read that CBJ talked to Marner about a 6-7 year deal and he wanted a shorter term.
- PatC80

I questions whether there are really any teams that fit the bill of being a match on an offer sheet ....

1. Have to be willing to offer MM a short term deal at 10+ milly walking him to UFA ...
2. Have to have the right compensation ...
3. And MM has to prefer the idea of being there for the next 5 yrs.

Who's a match?

I think elliot F said they talked to Marners side on it...and did not offer one because they wanted shorter term
- senstroll

That was also my understanding. They were willing to consider one at 7 years only. When Marner said he wanted 5, they decided against it.

I question whether they'd be prepared to give both MM and MR 5 x 10+ at the same time.

And strike that ...Avs don't have the compensatory picks for a deal 8.5 - 10.5 ...

Summer talk, Mitch is signing in TO before training camp. I know it's summer, lets talk about something more interesting.

As much as it pains me to say this, the Habs might be able to pull it off.

MM is leaving for the Habs b/c he might be able to get an extra couple bucks?

I still don't see any matches.

We can only hope Mr Bergevin does the Leafs a favour like that

I really dont see a downside for the Leafs here.

If mitch gets an offer sheet, its going to be a 5-8 year deal.. and if mitch actually signed it, they Leafs either get 4 unprotected 1sts or Marner at less than 10.5

The context was that the worst case scenario for the Leafs would be an offer sheet at 5 x 10.5 ....

I don't see any team that has the picks wanting to do that ..and that MM would want to sign for.

He isn't jumping ship for 500k per year either. Life is good here for MM.

My thoughts exactly. They give him something and we match it, or we take the draft picks..
Bergevin's done it earlier this off-season, he might be tempted to do it again..

Here's the issue I think ...

Marner doesn't want term ....how many teams are willing to offer 5 yrs or less and have the cap space and are willing to sacrifice the compensation ...and fewer teams have that compensation (8.5 - 10.5) ...and how many that do are even teams that would interest MM.

I don't see a match at all.

5-7 years**

8 year contracts are only for extensions signed with the team who owns the player's rights, and they have to be signed before July 1. Anything after July 1 for Marner can only carry a max term of 7 years.

that's the crux of it all.

habs proved this. they were only willing to go out with a limp Richard offer of 8.5M and 1 first. nobody is dumb enough to give up +10.5M in cap space plus 4 1sts.
