If the Leafs don't believe Marner deserves a Matthews type contract then I say they sit tight all the way through to December. Don't give in, give a final offer and leave it at that. If Marner and agent reject it they lose a season and damage a bright career.

If I was the Leafs I would tell Marner's camp, our offer is good until the start of the season. If you haven't singed by then, we will let you sit for the year. The cap hit goes up as the season progresses, therefore your deal is based on cap hit. The longer you go in to the season, the less we pay you to adjust for the cap implications. (They should have employed this method with Nylander and set a precedent) Honestly, you could do more with 10 million cap space and four 1st round picks.

I would think that the way Dubas has to view is ... yes the Leafs match at that price point... however, I would also think that if the team making the offer sheet were a dumpster fire .. that perhaps a trade is worked out... meaning if the Picks are anticipated to be high enough - then you engage in some kind of deal.

why? because the Leafs would need a good player to replace Marner's role right away...not waiting for a few first rounders to potentially develop.

for example - and this is a silly example - if the OfferSheet was from the Islanders...

then Barzal and 1st or Barzal and Pullock for Marner could be considered.

The same chimp (Dreger) that was going on about 11+ million dollar demands came out in late June and "clarified" by saying MM wanted short term and demand was never 11+ ....

I think he's probably 5 x 10'ish and the Leafs were 8 x 10'ish or 5 x 9'ish.

For Ferris it's attended York University. It must take a special talent to flunk out of York.
