Laine is severely overrated due to playing in a Canadian market - jcragcrumple
6th in goals scored last 3 years after having a “bad” year where he scored 30.
More goals last 3 years than
Patrick Kane
Pastranak
Crosby
Taresenko. |

What the hell is going on in Winnipeg? Lots of drama and rumors, and supposedly camps becoming divided. Go check out the Winnipeg blog and the comments. Their Laine debate sounds a little like a discussion of ROR here.

wadr, not sure you can 'severely' overrate a player who scored 110 goals before the age of 21 |

wadr, not sure you can 'severely' overrate a player who scored 110 goals before the age of 21 - Michael Pachla
You're going to get a 35-45 goal, 65-70 point winger who does half of his scoring on the PP. He's good, he's just so incredibly hyped up by the Canadian hockey media machine.
We'll see if he gets back to shooting 18% + again. He's a good player, and we could use him, but my offer to the Jets would probably insult their fans. I'd give them Risto and a 2nd |

I've been a nelson-defender...here's the quote:
Unfortunately for Casey Nelson he's remembered more for not doing anything after captain Jack Eichel was plastered to the boards in a questionable way by Colorado defenseman Nikita Zadorov then he is for his solid play as a reserve defenseman. Nelson plays a heady defensive game using positioning and stickwork but also has some nice traits offensively like being able to get his shot through from the point. That's not nearly enough to crack the top-six on defense but having a good reserve d-man at $812K means he has value, if not for Buffalo then for some other team who would probably snatch him up if exposed to waivers.
although it might be ambiguous, that last part was about my belief that he'd not clear waivers if the sabres sent him down. - Michael Pachla
Waivers at the end of camp are tough to predict. Usually, every team is playing their own number's game and almost nothing happens. I think you're right on Casey though. Someone will be dealing with a couple D injuries and see a cheap depth RD.
For the Sabres, I don't see why wouldn't keep him as a 7/8 D. Hunwick's a reasonable 7, but he's not in their long term plans. Nelson could stick around in a depth role (or just walk at the end of the year too). |

total goals + assists: 110 + 74
pp goals + assists : 44 + 24
that's about a combined 37% production coming from the powerplay

What did the D depth chart look like last year? I remember a lot of questions about RHD.... "Could Dahlin play on his off-hand?" It feels like we flipped that, and now we have a surplus of RHD. Can anyone play on their off-hand?
Also, seeing that LHD depth chart, I now hope we are able to sign Gardnier on a value deal:
LHD
Dahlin
Gardnier
Scandella/McCabe/Pilut
Looks a lot better to me. |

at $812K, I think it makes sense to keep him in a reserve role |

Yes, but 37% rounds up to 50% instead of down to 0% |

Alright fair, 37% instead of 50%
Idk, I'm just not as enamored with him as others. He'd be a good return for Risto and a small + but I wouldn't overpay to get him just to pay him a boat load of cash |

Agreed, I think that an easy call this year. Is he back the following year? That's much tougher to predict. No confusion about his UFA status this time around.

Substitute your name for Broads and Laine’s name for ROR and I’ve read this post 250 times already - last season.

Well the Sabres are paying a 26 yo LW $9m per for the same level of production, coupled with the fact the roster is devoid of RW talent as presently constructed. I'd be willing to pay $8m or so for a 3-4 year "bridge deal".
With that, and given the club will ge close to the cap before Laine, they likely need to move about $2.5m more out than just Risto....so, Risto, Sheary ($750k retained), and some draft pick (just not a 6th) |

I see the fit, I just don't like the cost both in terms of trade capital and salary cap space. |
