I've been a nelson-defender...here's the quote:
Unfortunately for Casey Nelson he's remembered more for not doing anything after captain Jack Eichel was plastered to the boards in a questionable way by Colorado defenseman Nikita Zadorov then he is for his solid play as a reserve defenseman. Nelson plays a heady defensive game using positioning and stickwork but also has some nice traits offensively like being able to get his shot through from the point. That's not nearly enough to crack the top-six on defense but having a good reserve d-man at $812K means he has value, if not for Buffalo then for some other team who would probably snatch him up if exposed to waivers.
although it might be ambiguous, that last part was about my belief that he'd not clear waivers if the sabres sent him down. - Michael Pachla
I will work on my reading skillz. If he can, in order or priority move:
Hunwick
Bogo
Scandella
I knew you were a Nelson defender, it just caught me off guard.

I like him a lot, but I just don't see the fit. - Lunaion
I see the fit. WPG needs RHD, and we need a RW. I wonder how/if the two teams bridge the gap between their perceived values |

Nelson can go too. All 4 of them are useless. |

Substitute your name for Broads and Laine’s name for ROR and I’ve read this post 250 times already - last season. - Der Kaiser
Shooting percentage is a new wrinkle, I believe
I'll be over here screaming "shooting percentage" into the void |

Nelson is fine for a 7th or 8th Dman at $800k.
IF, the issue of not fighting Zadrov when he hammered Jack...get use to it guys...team is very very soft...dumping Nelson because of it changes absolutely nothing, nothing. |

That I can agree with. I’d rather let him sit in the press box for $800K. Send Hunwick down to Roch for cap relief. Trade Scandella out west for anything we can get for him. |

Care to elaborate where you see him fitting in with the way our RHD situation is looking right now ? Even if we move Risto, he is still behind Montour, Miller, Bogo (more of a toss up), with the Joker also pushing for NHL time. He’s a warm body to have in the press box that only costs $800K.

I think you just elaborated where he would fit in..... in the press box. Having someone that can play on the third pair in a pinch isn't useless. we learned in 06/07 the value of having defensemen. If he only costs $800k, I'm fine with that. |

Probably because he was one the only players with a positive Corsi and Fenwick rating on the team. Or possibly because he was one of only four players on the team with a positive +/-. His $800k salary is really holding this team back. |

This. He is far down the list of problems this team has.
Sobotka
Hundwick
Okposo
Wilson
Scandella
Bogo
are all getting moved ahead of Nelson if I'm the GM. |

Imagine if we had 2 Casey Nelsons floating around the organization in May of 2006 |

In limited minutes though. Imo Nelson and Erod benefit greatly from the cheerleader effect. Stick a solid 6 in the room with a bunch of 3’s and she looks like an 8.
Where would Erod and Nelson fit on cup contending rosters ? On our roster they look fantastic when comparing them to Sobotka, Elie, Wilson, Girgensons/Larsson (offensively speaking as both of those players score very well defensively), Hunwick, Scandella, and an oft injured Bogo. |

That is hyperbole. I said he wasn't useless. They are both nice role players who have value contracts. Teams need those. If either wants 4+m/year they can both take a walk but neither is close to a problem with this roster. Nor were they last year. |

Nelson would be Chad ruhwedel in this scenario
Erod would be, idk, Rocco Grimaldi maybe |

Girgensons-Larsson-Erod would be a good 4th line. Nelson is great to have in the press box in case of injury. |

Same spot he would here. 7th/8th Dman that can hold his own if needed to hold down a spot due to injuries. Heck, Vegas currently has 5 dmen on their roster. Only two RD. Nelson could be on their opening night roster. Nelson and a 2nd for Gusev. |

You don't think we could swindle them into a Hundwick + 3rd for Gusev's rights? I think thats beyond fair honestly. |

Risto and Nelson for Tuch and Reaves. Gives Vegas a much needed dman and space to sign Gusev. If they add Mcnabb we'll add Girgs so they can save an additional $1m. Throw in a couple 3rds. |

That's superficial stuff. I'm more concerned with what the long-term core of this team looks like.
Laine thrives on the PP in Eichel's spot. The cap space is a big issue. Does it really make sense to pay Skinner + Laine (one dimensional wingers) 19m? Can you win like that? Does in force Sam out?
