Defensemen play higher minutes because it’s easier. And calling Jones a future Norris winner is probably way off. He’s not good enough. If he played for us you wouldn’t even like him.

I'm just a hockey fan trying to look at something objectively.

Jones-Rielly would be one hell of a top pair. Probably playing close to 30 minutes a night in the playoffs.

Trading Matthews would have freed up nearly $6M in cap space for 3 years.

I think Nylander can play 2C, but 3C is a stretch as the minutes are harder and the talent around you isn't as good. Then again, Kadri is still on the team.

Right away you save a 1st round pick not having to trade Marleau. That's without the extra returns in the deal.

That 3 year window fits perfectly with Tavares entering his 32 season.

We should trade Matthews to free up cap space?

This guy hates the leafs man. Just treating him with the respect he deserves. Unless you believe that bs about just a hockey fan wanting to chat about the leafs.
He’ll be somewhere else tomorrow making fun of you.

You don’t get a Matthews or a Marner for Reilly. These defensemen are hot and cold. Only a very small number are great every year.
Tyler Myers looked like a giant sized Bobby Orr in his rookie season. Trouba regressed Segachev regressed. Barrie’s numbers are as good as any of them and we didn’t give up anything close to Marner to get him.

Remember when we got Phaneuf? That worked out well.

Keep the kids we drafted.

It would be lovely if they could figure out how to lock up both Muzzin and Barrie after the upcoming season.

This is INSANE. You don't trade a 22 year-old franchise centre to "Free Up Cap Space". LOL.

Who cares about the late first round pick? You have lost your #1 overall pick from 3 yeaars ago. And having Marleau still on the team? He was so bad. He needed to go.

It is my opinion Dubas won't even bother trying to sign Muzzin. He doesn't seem to fit in with the plan. Barrie on the other hand, yes. He should be signed if he has a huge year.

Muzzin is too old , too slow and lacking the talent to keep. He's replaceable with cheaper talent.

He was very good, don't get me wrong. But Dubas is very careful at whom he gives long-term $ to. Even though people say he learned from LOu, he does things completely different. Dubas keeps blue chip talent and let's everyone else go. He's from the school of identifying 5-7 core pieces and finding cheaper options. Muzzin does lack that talent. A long-term contract to him would not be wise cap.

Leafs litterally have no bad long term deals now. That needs to stay that way.

Barrie though? Yeah. A RH D in his prime that has that talent? LOCK-HIM-UP, LOCK-HIM-UP, LOCK-HIM-UP!!!!

Just wondering...serious question. If the Leafs have been golfing since 1967, how long have the Canucks been golfing? They've never won a cup so is it since the Big Bang? Infinity? Undefined?

While talent is hardest to find, you need more than that to win a cup. Muzzin brings some physicality to an already much too soft team.

I agree, but you can find physicality for cheaper. Giving 6 million to a slow D who will likely get worse isn't always wise.

Those supporting guys that idiots like Benning overpay just come back to haunt you. You can find alternatives. With elite talnet you would require those top picks and often lottery luck.

i meant ones that can actually play.

if that were true we would have some by now if it were that easy. its been years since weve had a dman with some physicality to his game.

The issue is he won't sign for 2-3 years. He'll want 5-6 years at 6 million per.

Heck, I'll change my thoughts on him for a 2-3 year deal. But no chance that'll happen.

Now you're looking at being stuck with Muzzin past his prime. And he lacks foot speed.
