Yes. I intentionally posted a gif in reference to an 80's hit because Zezel seemed dissatisfied with the lack of attention to his 80's-ness.

luxury tax would be the best solution

that extra money could go to the poorer teams and let them spend more too

everyone wins except for the fans of poor hockey teams that no one cares about

or, a team can declare 2 or 3 "franchise tagged players", where the CAP hit above 10M (or some other reasonable high end percentage of the CAP) doesn't count against the CAP.

e.g. Auston Matthews 11.6 Salary equivalence; max CAP hit 10m$ a year.

max one team can have is 3 or perhaps 4 of the "Franchise tagged" players.

pretty much

an unfair advantage is what it takes, and even then the leafs failed for like 40 years

an even-er field / salary cap era (although there are still advantages for teams with money) has forced the leafs to be smarter.

we used to ice colton orr, jay rosehill and frazer mclaren all at the same time...

If Mitch Marner wants to be that ruthless with a team that reportedly offered him 10 million a season for 8 years which he rejected then I wouldn't want him back in my dressing room anyway. As for his grubby agent Daren Ferris I suspect a lot of prospects will want no part of hiring him due to fear that GM's will avoid drafting kids he's representing. If you're a team drafting anywhere out of the top 10 it's pretty much a crap shoot anyway so why wouldn't you avoid his clients?

You may not want Marner back in your dressing room (until he signs that is, then you'll love him again) but 30 other teams would. The Leafs certainly do. Otherwise Dubas wouldn't have jumped through hoops this summer to open up the cap space to fit him in.

He doesn't want the term; seems to be a theme with TOR's players, except Willy, everyone's favourite villain last year.

6 years last year is no better than 5 years this year.
He took an extra year so they all could expire at the same time?
Something seems fishy.

Strictly a matter of betting on himself. Leafs can only offer a 6,7 or 8 year deal or a bridge deal. They will not sign Mitch to a contract that makes him a UFA at the same time as Matthews. (also 4 year deal is a non-starter) Bridge deal would be better for both sides at this point. It will give Marner enough time to figure out that Ferris is a douchebag idiot incompetent imbecile and move on to the next deal.
