I think it makes the whole league more interesting when every team has a similar capacity to win.

I'm a big fan of the salary cap, despite making salaries as big of a discussion point as performances.

- Scabeh

I'm not a fan. Does it promote parity? To a certain extent yes in my opinion. Do teams make extra profits living off the success of other franchises - yes. Should finacially successful teams struggle to keep franchises afloat that provide terrible teams and entertainment for the fans?

Would rather see a 24 team league with no cap.

Don't get me wrong, as a Leafs fan, I would franking love it if the NHL moved to a luxury tax model. I'd franking love it.

But having said that, I understand why the owners (or at least the small market ones) like it.

As an aside, I can't believe anyone would watch the Premier League. Or the Scottish League. Or the Spanish or Italian leagues...

Meh, I dont miss the days big UFAs would all go to Detroit, New-York, Toronto, etc...

Now star players pretty much have to spread out across the league.

I think the current system works.

Which raises the interesting (oh my God, it's summer and we have nothing to talk about) question:

What 8 teams do you eliminate?

Yes, I'm already considering Seattle to be a team.

There's really only about 4 teams that need to be cut.

The Panthers just need to move back to Miami.

I'm going to disagree here.

Philly has a long and storied history of running good goalies out of town.

UFAs are garbage. The only good one in the last decade has been Tavares. The key is all these high picks and signed back with their teams.

New York would sign Bobby Holik for 9 million per before the cap. Yeah...

Which is why fans need to cut some slack to the Matthewses and Marnerses and Pointses of the league.

Why should they get paid less than Tyler Franking Myers?

I don't understand the controversy about the Leafs paying a lot for young stars. They litterally no have bad contracts.

Canucks cap situation is hilarious. Benning has (frank)ed them so bad.

I think the RFA and UFAs are catching-up and they should. Much better to draft/develop your own stars. And the issue is, you can't even add a UFA for a supporting piece because you can't overpay for some 3rd or 4th liner.

Sparks: .902 Save %. 3.15 GAA.
Neuvirth: .859 Save% 4.27 GAA.

NightHawk has already proven that the Canucks are not only in a great spot, but all of their problems can be magicked away by Doctor Strange.

The amount of $ wasted on crap BEFORE any of the franchise pieces are signed makes my head spin

Once Dubas signs Marner everyone is taken care of and no bad contracts. But Leafs are in "Cap Hell", right kids?

You're correct of course. There are only 3 teams you could consider folding at this point. Does not piss me off any less though. Hate the cap.

My brother likes to make this "OK, I've had three beers - let's argue this" proposal:

Eliminate the draft.

Eliminate any restrictions on player movement (i.e., teams do not retain any rights after a contract has ended).

Keep the salary cap.

See what happens.

I have to admit, it's a pretty compelling argument.

Top draft picks would start making big salaries right off the bat, which would really throw team salary structures out of whack. Do you give a guy a 5 year contract? Only 3? 11?

Every July 1st would be the biggest poop show imaginable.

But at the end of the day, you would probably still have a good amount of parity. Teams like the Rangers and the Leafs would be top heavy, but you could probably build a strong team with a bunch of guys making moderate salaries.

Yes and the Leafs are (frank)ed because they will have at least 9 players earning the league minimum

Spezza for 700K was so much better than all that expensive poop Benning has signed for no reason.

Sign your young elite talent. Cheap-out on the supporting talent you can find every summer on the bargain in. Benning's lineup is litterred with "Ok" players being vastly overpaid and Boeser and Pettersson need to be signed .

Not the worst thing. He's better than Hutchinson, at least. Unless he fell completely off a cliff recently.

You may not want Marner back in your dressing room (until he signs that is, then you'll love him again) but 30 other teams would. The Leafs certainly do. Otherwise Dubas wouldn't have jumped through hoops this summer to open up the cap space to fit him in.
- gergeswillems

I actually think that Dubas has done a pretty good job of limiting CAP space. Leaving enough that Marner will/should have to sign a fair deal, and not an over-payment.
