Lol I guarantee you would lose your mind if that happens - gerbe75pts
If they bought him out? Yeah, it would be totally nonsensical, if it were possible.
If they trade him and risto for RNH? I'll be just fine |

It appears to be a matter of a 2-year deal vs. a 1 year deal. This article was written in 2016, so it is using a $3.5 million figure (it obviously went up with inflation):
https://www.lawinsport.co...ational-hockey-league-nhl
If the arbitration was initiated by the player, the club may be able to walk away from the award issued by the arbitrator, subject to certain restrictions. A club has the right to walk away from an award if the award is for $3,500,000 or more. If the club elects to walk away from the arbitration decision, for a one-year contract, the player will immediately become a free agent and be free to negotiate with any other team in the league. However, if the club elects to walk away from the arbitration award, for a two-year contract, the player and club will enter into a one-year contract equal to the compensation awarded for the first year as outlined in the arbitration decision. In this situation, the player will become an unrestricted free agent the next league year. Moreover, if the club initiated the arbitration, the club relinquishes their ability to walk away from the award.
If Rodrigues' deal is a 1-year deal, they cannot walk away. In Copp's situation, if they walk away, he gets a 1-year deal and becomes a UFA next year. |

As per TSN.
Copp and the Jets had their arbitration hearing Sunday and had until the decision was announced to reach a deal on their own, which they could not. The Jets now have the option to accept the contract or allow Copp to become a UFA.
TRANSACTION: F - Andrew Copp has been awarded a two-year contract with an AAV of $2.28 million by an independent arbitrator.
There doesn't seem to be any minimum to walk away. - Sabres1523
Here's the quirk in the arb process rules:
If team offers 1 year, they can't walk away under a certain salary threshhold (4ishM)
If the team offers 2 years, they CAN "walk away", but not entirely. The player must play for the arb award for one year, then the player can declare himself a UFA. |

Ok, I reviewed the CBA:
The Sabres can walk away if Botterill, Pegula and Krueger can catch him during a 5 minute game of "not it" on skates at the harbor center. |

That's not necessarily true.
Botterill technically has an extra 90 seconds because he only offered 1 year. |

No, but it's a moot point anyway imo. He has value around the league by any team that tracks advanced stats.
If they want him gone, he'll be part of a trade package, if that's possible, which, you'll have to ask Lunaion - jcragcrumple
Don't know of any reason they couldn't.

Kinda quiet,
so his personality doesn’t really match his style of play... yet
But yeah...
i think we could use a guy like him in our lineup when he’s ready
Cozens takes much more
Kinda funny actually
We joked about his thumb injury
Which he said is coming along nicely - jdfitz77
Trying to imagine how this joke would go.... Something like, dude, my girl would be so upset if my thumb was out of commission, my thumb is magic.

So there ya go. They accept the award and then trade him. That's what people who don't want him should be hoping for |

That's an interesting reading of the rule (and a source I've used before), enough that I checked the actual CBA. In the case of a 2 year award, the figure is $4,397,832 per year (not total). They have no walk away rights here.

btw team honored Copp's award, which means he will remain a Jet for at least one year. He can get traded after 1 year but he will have his current contract for year 2 pending BO. |

What if a team tracks basic stats?
Like 9 goals?
No snarl, grit or physical play.
