In " new" NHL anytime you can lock up your bottom 6 for less the 10 mill, you do it all day long. Pay EROD, he's a good player. Longer the better you lock them up for cheap. Top 6 is going to get crazy money, so locking up bottom 6 now at a low cost is a win. Why can't people see that, you keep EROD not walk from him. - SABRES 89
I get the concept, just not the $amount cited.
6 players for $10m is $1.67 per player.
So 6 players at Larry or Girg level? No thanks
Even if you had 3 players on ELC at say $970k each on your 4th line, that leaves your 3rd line at $2.4m each, or 3 Copps level, no thanks to that either.
The concept of tying up value based contracts is what every team is trying to achieve and isn't new. |

In an ideal world ..... teams would like this. But every team has an okposo like contract that they wish they could bury / get rid of. |

The middle class is being fazed out. It wouldn’t surprise me if 50% roster turnover on a yearly basis was normalized. ELC’s are gold. |

The middle class will be 1 year vet deals between 3-5 mill at most.
That’s actually how I built my nhl19 roster in gm mode lol Once I had the core players making bank.
It’s good to have that cap flexibility. |

The top level guys are getting paid for sure, and ELC's are worth gold indeed.
His concept is right, just not the $ value.
They really need to move to incentive, production based contracts on shorter term lengths.
That way when production of a player falls off, so does the contract / cap hit. If player exceeds expectations, they get paid. Hopefully they get there sooner than later. |

I disagree with your assessment. The steak isn't wasted if it's not filet, ribeye or strip. It was hangar, which is acceptable. - TheSabresTaco
Hanger steak is very high end. That's even worse! Butchers used to not even sell it because they kept it for themselves.

No, and let's leave erod aside here, as he seems to be polarizing.
You have a player who shows promise as a bottom 6 defensive player with some scoring upside.
Locking him in at the current rate and letting the market outpace his contract value is how to acquire solid value.

Down year this year, but they've gotten 3 out of 4 years so far with 15+ goals per year while making $2 per. Salaries have outpaced his contract, and now that's a value. They were able to do that because they gave him 6 years at $2 per. If they had given him 2 years, he would have been making $3.5 now |

Doesn't this support my argument that the $10m target for 6 players is unachievable though?
That is my main poi t.
The concept is absolutely correct of finding value contracts, but cannot get 6 value contracts in a $10m budget...
probably more like $13-$15m, $5m for 4th line, $8 - $11m for 3rd |

Your $10m budget for this year becomes a $15m budget within 2 years due to salary/cap inflation, while the player you signed to the $10m budget stays the same. That's the whole point; these contracts avoid salary inflation |

We seem to be talking past each other.
I get what you are saying and agree 100%
My point is $10 for 6 players today.
Do you agree that $10m in 2019 for 6 - Bottom 6 players is virtually unachievable?
If not, show me how the Sabres pull that off with this roster this year.
Saying Wilson, Smith, etc is all well and great, but what about Sobotka, Girgs, Larsson? |

I think 89s point is that 10mil for the bottom6 is what we should strive for
Obviously that means finding a sucker to take Okposo... which is very unlikely
And dumping Sobatka might even be tough
But yeah...
the goal would be to lock up a couple decent guys on bargain deals that we can count on
And have a couple ELC guys contribute as well
That’s how u get 6guys around 10mil
