Here is another What If?
I know this wouldn't happen, but I don't know the rule
Smith has a M-NTC
If we sent him down, and he got claimed off waivers by one of the teams on his no trade list, he would have to go right? because he wasn't traded ? |

We aren't gurus, we just disagree with your view. The price is higher than I would have liked, but the opportunity to get a winger who already is a first line player and has the potential to move into the upper echelon of the league was hard to pass up.
Let's see what Gorton can do with Nam etc. Many wanted Smith or Kirk or Staal nought out, regardless of what NY did this offseason in free agency. Granted, potentially doing so one more team down the road would have been optimal. But getting Trouba on the cheap, in terms of assets not contract, and Panarin changed the equation.
But i can understand you both and others having a differing view.
Sorry Jan, I disagree with this. The Rangers can sign a 1st line player nearly any offseason, especially if there's a solid foundation in place. NYC is desirable place to be and play.
The Rags overpaid for Panarin, because that's what they do. He's a fantastic player, but you just drafted higher than you ever have. The timing is off, clear the cap for a year or two without having desperation attached to it. Gain assets near a deadline instead of packing some off to move a contract.
I get how the NY sports market is, i've spent enough time there. |

You have been bad mouthing Panarin signing since you we got him and have never mentioned once he’s a great player, do you realize this player is a top 10-15 player in the sport?
Get on board, or get off the train...it’s as simple as that
This team is loaded and is going to dominate in a couple of seasons |

Do you realize he isn't?
He's right down there at 18th on the scoring leaders, about to turn 28. He just cashed in on some of his best years. That doesn't even account for Dmen like Jones, Josi etc
He's a good player and all, but he's far from top 10 right now and likely going to drop sooner rather than later. |

Since we are playing what if, what if the assignment is refused and the contract is terminated, is that a possibility? Hasn’t that happened once during free Amgen you, the rangers signed a guy from Montreal and he decided that he wanted to go back and they terminated the contract? - blueshirts_fan
I don’t think he can refuse to go to the minors, we put him there 2 years ago. |

He did turn down more money to come to the Rangers, you did read that didn’t you? I really don’t think that a leafs fan should throw stones about over payment. I remember a few years ago the contract given to Jeff Finger, that was a head scratcher. What did Taveres bring this year aside from cap he’ll and trying to find a way to get Marner back into the fold? Also you’re pretty much the only person not liking the Panarin signing forgive me for not putting any weight behind your opinion.

Anytime you HAVE to trade a player and get less than value for him and include a "sweetener" to get it done is terrible asset management. We are still in a rebuild, last I looked we havent made the playoffs in 2 yrs, so dealing assets for cap space is something contending teams do, not rebuilding.
I liked the Trouba trade but Panarins signing will hurt us unless Gorton can do some magic. - Brukie
By possibly trading away a lower end asset (3rd -4rd pick) to dump salary we get panarin. Would you have made that trade w another team? You bet your ass-et you would.

I’d argue he’s in the top 15. 70 plus points every year. Yes he’s going to be 28 but he’s elite and only played 4 years here so has low miles. Again this is very different from every old mediocre player the rangers have overpaid. I get your opinion to potentially wait, but it’s ny they like to speed things up a bit

Norway is in our hearts today. Hopefully, that didn't hit too close to home for you.
Relatedly, at dinner last night, my 10 year old and 8 year old asked me how I felt when I heard about 9/11. It took about 10 -15 minutes of uncomfortable and almost too emotional explanation that I never heard about it because I was there.

Why would be buyout Smith when he and Beleskey can go to the AHL??? Why create dead cap space when there is no reason to create it!!!
Nobody wants Vlad plus with the signing of Panarin and the addition of Kravtsov not sure if trading Vlad at this time is our best option??
Buying out Staal is even dumber, defensively Staal is one of our best players at that position and has played very well the last two seasons finally being over his injuries!
If you buyout anyone it needs to be Shatty unless if you can trade him for a second round pick in next years draft since next years draft is stockpiled high!
The only trade where we would get a return of a first round pick is for Kreider! As much as I would hate to have to trade him unless he takes a discounted contract he will have to go! - patersonnick46
Dude you're delusional if you think anyone is trading a HIGH 2nd for Shattenkirk. I'd give him away for NOTHING if we could, because it's all about that cap space. Your two situations are hilarious. Either buy him out or trade him for a high second? Why would anyone give us a high 2nd for him?

Since entering the league he's 7th in points, last I checked and my math is ok not super but 7 falls in between 1 and 15 |

They are looking to keep him. Multiple moves need to be made first. Look for Smith buyout soon |

Despite the fact I'd rather go swimming in a port-a-potty then see either of those players sign with the teams they did, I think they're both pretty close in terms of talent and there was zero "overpayment" for either.
People can argue and nitpick over semantics and subjective fan-assessments of their "true value" but at the end of the day market-price is market price and that's what they were worth. |
