I'm gonna repost this:
My brother likes to make this "OK, I've had three beers - let's argue this" proposal:
Eliminate the draft.
Eliminate any restrictions on player movement (i.e., teams do not retain any rights after a contract has ended).
Keep the salary cap.
See what happens.
I have to admit, it's a pretty compelling argument.
Top draft picks would start making big salaries right off the bat, which would really throw team salary structures out of whack. Do you give a guy a 5 year contract? Only 3? 11?
Every July 1st would be the biggest poop show imaginable.
But at the end of the day, you would probably still have a good amount of parity. Teams like the Rangers and the Leafs would be top heavy, but you could probably build a strong team with a bunch of guys making moderate salaries. - Atomic Wedgie
But you iliminated the draft, how do you get top draft picks?

I think the only reason Dubas was able to get Kerfoot in the deal was because Barrie is likely a rental (unless the leafs let Muzzin walk or shed salary somewhere else).
if Barrie had term on his deal, that's likely a 1 for 1 swap.
Kerfoot is going to be a solid bottom six player for sure.....I watched a bunch of Avs games last year when I was out west, he reminds me a lot of Pageau (using an Ottawa player as a point of comparison)
as for it being a "great trade" by Dubas....I think there are a few "ifs" that need to happen. IF the leafs win this year, then it's a great trade........IF the leafs re-sign Barrie, then it's a great trade. if they go out in the 1st or 2nd rd, and Barrie walks as a UFA, then it's probably a win for the Avs (assuming Kadri doesn't have a huge falloff in Colorado)
as long as you guys can keep Ceci out of your top 4, you should have a solid top 4.......although most projections I read had Ceci either paired with Rielly or Barrie - sensarmy_11
Rielly or Muzzin, aren't Ceci and Barrie both RHD?

you're probably right, not 100% sure on your RHD/LHD combos.....but he's definitely penciled into the top 4 (at least until Dermott is healthy) which should be terrifying for Leaf fans. Hopefully Babcock figures out early enough how awful he is, and moves him down......our coaches were too dumb to ever figure it out.

The problem is that Ceci is 100% better than Marincin and Holl, so he'll be shoved into the top-4. It's a sad reality, but there it is.

GMs struggle to manage the cap with proven hockey players. Having your cheap players on their "prove-it" contracts is what helps teams to gel it together. I think if you removed that and started paying McDavid $16m for 7 years in the first year of his deal, you're immediately creating cap problems - but you scored the best guy!
Imagine paying $12m x 7 for a 17 year old Alexandre Daigle.
The other thing I see as a major detractor is that many 17-18 year old kids would be signing at home. Or trying to. A friend of mine was golfing with some guy from Arizona - like an AGM or a Scout or something - before the draft a couple years ago, and he said that Matthews desperately wanted to be on the Coyotes. Tavares and McDavid desperately wanted to be Leafs when they were 17/18. Crosby, I believe, desperately wanted to be a Canadien.
The kids wouldn't leave home.
And it's not just money - it's status, fanbase, and so on. The rich would get richer.

Zaitzev is (frank)ing horrible as well.
I can take another month or so of a poop d man there. As long as we don't have to watch Z for another 5 years I am happy.

how can you say that a player who has been statistically the WORST d-man in the league for like 3 years in a row, is 100% better than ANYONE.
and I'm not just ragging on the guy cuz he plays for the leafs now, in fact nothing makes me happier............I poop on him ALL THE TIME when he was with us.

One more note, that I thought of, was that in today's world, you take a flier on a lot of players with potential. Maybe they'll develop? Maybe with the right guidance and direction and planning, they'll turn out . . .
A lot of those guys probably never get that chance to show what they have, because no one gives them a shot. Those guys are "free" and aren't paid for until you decide to give them an ELC.

That's because you are no aware of Leafs cap space after this season. He have plenty of $ to sign Barrie.

I'd like to see that just to see what some of the top prospects would do.
Would they choose their favourite team growing up or would they accept going anywhere that would be a good fit for them.
Can guarantee that Edmonton wouldn't have gotten McJesus and the Leafs most likely wouldn't have gotten Matthews. Probably still have Marner, though.

I live in Ottawa mate and I know how bad Ceci is, but Marincin is an AHL defender and Holl is an ECHL defender. He's better than them sadly.

Well when you play on the worst team in the league as a number 1 D when you are a bottom pairing guy your stats will suffer.
And nothing makes you happier? Wait until you watch Z play

from most articles I read, it seemed that zaitsev had a drop in his play when Babcock tried to use him as a shutdown guy.
maybe he sucks, maybe he was misused, maybe it was both.......I'm hoping a change of scenery will change that. maybe less media scrutiny and pressure helps him.
maybe the same will happen with Ceci....although he'll be even more under the microscope in Tor than he was in Ott

Rosen was going to be a star before, but he's poop now, so he doesn't count. - AdamFrench
It angers me that he was in the trade because literally hours before the trade I said that Rosen was guaranteed to be on the Leafs 3rd pairing. Making me look foolish.

Not in the slightest. He was used as a shutdown guy because he can break the cycle...It is the one single thing he can do decently well. He can't pass the puck, he can't shoot, he can't skate well.
Just like Ray Farraro said about him...He doesn't do anything particularly well, he is just kind of there.
I would like to announce I dislike the Leafs more than any other team in pro sports except the Rangers and Red Sox. This is not a JT thing, I just genuinely hate the Leafs!
Good Day
