Basically every team besides the Blues are desperate to win the cup.

- c1067

Well 4 of those franchises have won cups since the leafs and the Thrashers only joined the league 30 years after the last leaf cup. So yep, leafs. Way to go Ek.

sour subject:

but if Oilers keep this pace up McDavid will be asking for a trade.

to me, that there shows they should be the most desperate.

Imagine losing the best offensive player since Gretzky because you can't build a team around the kid...even with multiple firsts and top 5 picks.

Time is ticking, the hourglass sand is trickling...

And in a clear landslide, the most desperate poster for attention is.....

Komisally!

- Tumbleweed

Here, here! Called it...I'll just repost what I said in the last blog:

add Nashville and SJ (maybe even MIN..teams with closing windows) and take out Toronto (I would bet that Dubas is not worried about his cap situation, an could care less the last time the leafs won a cup)

That being said I wouldnt put it past EK to pick TO...it is about the hits after all and the morons led by K-Rex and co. have nothing better to talk about.

Ek got it right, Habs aren't even on the list. You could argue the Habs are desperate to make the playoffs having missed the last couple years but with the best prospect pool in hockey coming in the next 1-3 years making a mistake out of desperation could throw a wrench into all of that. Stay the course, you'll be a contender in 2-3 years.

Well done, Ek

I think Habs fans are simply content masturbating while making sad, desperate proclamations about the imminent demise of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Like sands through the hourglass, so are McDavid’s days as an Oiler.

The fact that the Oilers didn't even make this list shows how inept Ek really is at his job.

Sure. The Leafs are the most desperate team in the NHL. The Leafs. The Leafs, who have their core (aside from Marner, who will get done just before camp) locked up through most of their prime. The Leafs, who have some of the leagues most promising young elite players in Marner and Matthews. The Leafs, who just improved their D situation on the right side. The Leafs, who have TWO elite C's who are both capable of scoring 50. The Leafs, who got rid of Gardiner and Kadri (two of the main reasons the Bruins beat us in back to back years). The Leafs, who have a larger window than most to win. The Leafs, who have one of the best top 9 ever assembled. The Leafs, who still have insanely promising blue line prospects in the pipeline.

I think Ek targets the Leafs for clicks. Don't be a click-bait hack. Speak the truth Ek.

The true top 5 most desparate clubs are:

5. Tampa (Needs to recover from that choke-show against Columbus after putting up a historic season)
4. Florida (Just spent a boatload of money on a streaky goalie who hasn't won anything except the Vezina behind some of the best young dmen in the league. They continue to draw big names and big expectations, but struggle to get it done during the season. This team needs a deep playoff run. Badly.)
3. Nashville (The window is closing fast, and they just signed Duchene to a ludicrous contract which is not going to help matters. Pekka is nearing the end of his career and Saros may not be ready to take the reigns. Josi is due for a new contract next year, certain to be in the 9M range. Things are going to get dicey if Nashville can't put it together this year.)
2. San Jose (The Sharks were one of the most elite teams in the league for a decade and were not able to hoist the cup. Some good playoff runs, but just not good enough. They've already lost Pavelski to the cap game, and with Karlsson's new contract, they're painted into a corner of win now or not at all. Their core is aging and beginning to break apart piece by piece.)
1. Edmonton (10 top 10 picks in the last 11 seasons. 6 of those picks were in the top 5, four being FIRST OVERALL picks. Not only have they not won a cup, but they haven't even made the playoffs the majority of the time. This is the leagues most horribly mis-managed team. Ken Holland has a ton of work to do.)

Honourable mentions go to Arizona, LA, Montreal and New Jersey.

I would put Edmonton #1 as well. They had 4 1st overalls in 6 years, including a generational talent and somehow need to start an entire new rebuild now. And they are on the clock with McDavid. They can't just lose every year with him.

Toronto is set up very nicely for years. Don't believe the "Cap Hell" narrative, once they sign Marner they have everyone locked up with litterally no bad contracts (When people point to Matthews and NYlander as your "Bad" contracts, you know you are doing something right).

Goalie Confidence?
While Frederik Andersen has been sold, he has been outplayed in every Game 7 loss over the last three years...and the Leafs refuse to address with a serious backup.

Leafs agreed to a PTO with Neuvirth. Whether he can stay healthy is a huge "if," but he'd be a serious backup if so.

Ya know, this may be one of the times when FlyerBuzz would have been appropriate. The team hasn't won the Cup since 1975. Giroux is a true superstar talent, but is aging. Voracek may not be everyone's ideal two-way player, but he's produced well...and is aging. They've overhauled the front office. And with Comcast taking over completely and finally moving out the Ed Snider/Broad Street Bullies management, the personality of this organization seems like it will change.

Add in that teams compete for attention in Philly, the Sixers are on the upswing, and Wentz is hoping to actually play football, I think the Flyers should be desperate.

You know, I might have put Philly on my list but even past their aging stars, they have some key young talents that will be the real difference makers for them going forward. Players like Carter Hart, Travis Sanheim, Nolan Patrick, Ivan Provorov (once he signs), Travis Konecny, and Sean Couturier has a good amount of quality hockey left in him to complement all these young guys. Then you add in key guys in the pipeline like Phillipe Myers, freshly drafted Bobby Brink, German Rubstov, Joel Farabee, Cam York and Morgan Frost. I don't think they're in desperation mode at all. I think the Flyers are on the upswing and are probably a playoff team this year.
