Interesting - I'm not opposed to having him be a net front presence on the PP this year, given how many shots Gio/Brodie/Ras sift through from the point, would be nice to have a "Holmstrom/Smyth" type guy who can clean things up in front of the net. Whether that's a plan, or just an option if the PP hits a lull, I just think the Flames need to figure out how to maximize his skill set.

What drove me nuts with Neal is he would get to his favorite spot to shoot and just hang out there. If the guy had a little adaptability, or went to the harder spots on the ice, he probably would've potted 30 last year. Guys who can't skate can still score if they are willing to do the tough jobs.

RFA magic by Treliving once again. Bennett at 2.55 per will likely be a bargain for the next 2 years, especially if he gets more ice time and pp time, of which he should considering Neal is gone, and likely Frolik as well. Does it bring him to UFA status though? Or only arbitration eligible once again?

Edit : according to Capfriendly, arbitration eligible RFA again.

Nice contract for Benny

This was a good write-up Todd, probably the most honest & straight forward run-down on the arena deal I've read so far

Betting Aho's deal is about what we should expect, maybe $200k less because he's not a centre and he's not on the top line. If Tre is a magician, he comes in at 7.75

The Bennett signing is fantastic tbh. Highly likely to look like robbery as soon as the season starts. Tre hits a homet with the RFAs again.

As for Chucky, I think Aho's contract is a pretty good comparable. Chucky probably comes in slightly less, but with Aho setting the market I expect Tkachuk to be right around that mark.

Enjoy the optimism, but Chucky likely gets as much if not more than Aho barring a miracle. Aho came out and said he just wanted the quickest most acceptable contract to get negotiations over with. He wasnt looking for the most money he could get, nor anything else, just to be able to take most of his offseason off. Chucky looks to be getting market value. He looks to be waiting it out to see what some of his comparative colleagues get and will look for fair value.

Hoping he takes a team friendly is unlikely from his family name. Just check what Keith did anytime his contract came up. A friendly deal isnt likely in the cards. He would rather a bigger contract in a middling US market if he is anything like his dad.

Fair, I think if you look back at things though, Chucky signed his rookie deal 2 weeks after the draft, so as much as his dad might influence things, it's a very different NHL today than it was 20 years ago as well.

I think Aho's deal is a good bar simply because he plays a more valued position in the NHL, has produced at similar level (slightly ahead of Chucky) and the tax rates are not terribly different between Carolina and Alberta - 6% delta.

GMs will also lean on that Aho deal as a market setter, and as much as Chucky might point to others as comps, I think Marner and Point will be the top 2 deals out of this class, and rightfully so. I think Rantanen is the next tier and then Chucky falls into the third tier of RFA forwards with Conner, Laine and Boeser. Think those guys all come in around the $8.5-9M mark.

Fair enough, but a rookie deal only has so much play. He can get only so many bonuses, and the money is capped. It was a bit different in 94 when Keith signed his entry level deal.

And as i said previously.... Aho was just looking for a quick fair deal. He didnt want to have to sit on it and compare offers all summer long. Possible Matthew may have been the same way if he was the first to receive an offer sheet he felt strong enough. But he didnt, and may be willing to sit and see what the others get.

Its fair to say Matthew may have more value to the Flames than another team and he and his agent know it. Point is the 3rd or 4th most valuable player on his team. Stamkos, Kucherov, Hedman, and Vasilevskiy likely more important to them at this time. Marner 2nd or 3rd. Behind or equal to matthews and Tavares. Rantanen is top 3 on his team. Connor and laine and Boeser are all lesser players at this moment. Conner is close but not quite there yet. Most valuable to their team at this moment i would say its Marner, Tkachuk, Rantanen, Point, Conner, Laine/Boeser. Then its up to the rest of the league to decide value.

Probably safe to say Tkachuk is a top 2-3 player on the flames. For being in a not so desired area (harsh winters, not a tax haven, ect), i doubt he takes a haircut and will wait it out to see what the 2nd tier get after marner signs. He is in the 2nd tier IMO, and doesnt have the tax support of Tampa. And should be worth more than 4 of those guys give or take the tax change of florida.
