Everyone's talking Marner, but I wonder if this gives them some room to sign Gardiner for a short-term deal. Saw some rumblings about how he's waiting on term, but may sign a "show-me" deal with the Leafs for 1-2 years.

Yup. Only if guys on elc's hit performance bonuses. Not much of an issue anymore.

In actuality cap space did go up I think. tmThis move was actually needed because they couldn't have signed Marner without it (unless a different move was made).

They weren't close enough to the cap ceiling to fully realise the benefits or putting Horton on the LTIR

If you go over the cap and have to use ltir. Bonuses used up in that time frame are pushed to the following year. Leafs will have a poop ton of cap next year so it's a no biggie.
