IMO, they will package them and trade up

They usually do the opposite with Dubas, take a package and get a higher pick

Yes. But in-season, it's not the total cap hit relief, the amount you exceed minus the max subtracted from the cap hit. For instance,

However, in the summer, you can take the full amount of $10.55M, but then I don't believer you can use further LTIR in-season since you've already taken the full amount.

- jmatchett383

Yes you can, they will also be using Dermott and Hyman's LTIR to start the season.

The problem I see with the Leafs is not the cap position they're in. If you think you can contend, you should be maxed out cap wise. I think the issue is with the balance of their cap spending. It's too forward heavy. I don't know enough about their young defense prospects but they're going to need to develop some quality young defenseman to take on bigger roles or else make a trade of some kind to add some long term depth to that position. They mitigated the problem somewhat with Barrie but he's in the last year of a deal and is going to want big money moving forward. Especially with the offensive numbers he is likely to put up on the Leafs.

Please explain to me how you can use LTIR (a cap overage allowance) before your roster is set.

I really mean that, in a non-antagonistic way. I really want to understand. When the Flyers had Chris Pronger in semi-retirement, they couldn't tap into his LTIR until the season started.

When Lou was here he decided he didn't like the rule so he told the league to change it. So the league came out and said that it was actually allowed all along.

Rule #1- Lou does what Lou wants.

Bad trade for the Leafs unless they can get Clarkson to sign an extension.

the Leafs 2016/17 drafts are really looking exceptionally awful.
These are the "Hunter" drafts? 18 picks and outside of Matthews is there going to be 1 really good NHL player?

The goalie picks look good..Korshkov might turn out to be a serviceable player, but there is half a dozzen players taken right after him that look way way better

Why does Hunter have such a great rep?

Hunter can't even get an NHL job. He couldn't even get the Oilers job. LOL

You're right, the drafts Hunter did on his own look terrible.

Not really a defense of Hunter, but Liljegren looks like he could be fine for a mid 1st round pick. He's doing pretty well in the AHL, and he's just turned 20. And Grundstrom, while traded, looks like he's not bad either. Lastly, from what I understand, Ian Scott has been overperforming, althought it's hard to tell with goalies.

No home runs, outside of a first overall, but some kids with some promise there too.

Not outstanding drafting, but not overly bad either.

Grundstrom and Brooks seem decent. And as you mentioned the goalies. I prefer the approach they took in the 15 and 19 drafts. Especially 15, where I think Bracco, timashov and lindgren could open some eyes this training camp.

The Leafs traded Durzi to LA in the Muzzin trade, correct? He had a real strong Memorial Cup if memory serves me correctly. He was an overrager though, so trying to not read too much into that. Anyone keep tabs on him after he left or just sort of let it go? He seems like a #3 or #4

Hes a center, and if gauthier can make it he can lol. Not saying he will be good, but his numbers show steady improvement.

Timashov is somewhat forgotten. But he too has gotten better every year in the ahl. In another era, leaf fans would probably be saying he should get a shot.

not really the same thing - Guathier was drafted as a low risk low reward depth centre. He was drafted as a depth defensive specialist that was highly likely to make the NHL.

If you didn't expect Gauthier to make the NHL you weren't paying attention. He was always highly likely to make the NHL, just not overly likely to be a high offense high impact player.

Brooks has far more offensive ability, and has the potential to be a top 6 player, like Guathier never had. But the chances of Brooks cracking the Leafs top 6, ever, is not good.

Do we know all 18 picks were his?...and solely his?
What about 2015..who's picks were they?
Korshov, scott, woll, lili, Grundstrom all look to have good potential.
