I would have embraced that kind of direction with trading Price and Weber 1-2 years ago, but too late now.
Big fan of the Rangers' style. Send a memo to the planet saying "WE ARE REBUILDING" and do it. - Not_Yan
1000 times yes. was a huge missed opportunity. and to this day, from a hockey perspective, it makes absolutely no sense that they didn't do it. i cannot recall of another situation where a team commits to a slow organizational rebuild while hanging on to its 2 aging stars. |

you don't agree?
many teams did get better in the East, not Mtl.
many Habs had a career season last year, will they repeat?
beside Weber, no major injuries last year, will it be the same?
I think 10% is reasonable. maybe 20 but not more than that imo. |

Well that's not what the opto-meter says*!
Here's what it says:
1)Habs did get better. They just got better from the inside with the young guys joining the team and the other young players improving.
2) Yeah alot of them had career season last year. But that's what you do when you keep on improving every year. More career seasons incoming for alot of these guys!
3) Weber will be back and in perfect shape from day 1. No injuries (aside from Price) could hurt the team more than his loss last season.
4) 10%? 20%? They're making it! 73.4%! EZ PZ.
*The optometer doesn't represent what I actually think. |

I don't see them finishing top3 in the division, so they'll have to beat teams like FLA, PHI, NYI, NJ, NYR for the last spot. like last season.
that should be another interesting season.

The Habs are still a couple years away from seeing the real impact of their last 3-4 drafts |

it'll be as usual. if Carey Price is a Vezina candidate they'll comete for a spot. if he's anything less they could easily free fall into the bottom 5. |

I'd rather see a bottom 5 scenario than another 9th position in the conference again. Top 5 talent often step in very quickly and have a real impact |

who knows? if they're out of it by February, maybe they'll wake up and trade both Weber and Price. that would help a lot more than keeping them. |

The real turning point comes in 21-22.
Plenty of guys turning UFA's leaving place for change and/or young guys coming in to replace them.
Our current prospect pool will have matured and the best one will be on the team.
Sure Weber and Price will be older but both will still be good hockey players at that point. Price especially. |

Well finishing 9th got us Caufield. Could have been worse. |

exactly, that's the only year they tanked.
the previous decade they just sucked really bad making the playoffs once and almost always drafting top 10.
then they got really lucky winning the lotery the Matthews year and signed Tavares. otherwise they would still suck as bad. - fidopro
This is 100% accurate. They only tanked the year they got Matthews and even then only really halfway through the season. The rest of the time they just sucked - but not on purpose.
Non-tank Drafted Players - off the top of my head
Schenn 5th(lol)
Kadri 7th
Rielly 5th
Nylander 8th
Marner 4th
Think about getting Morgan Rielly at 5th overall and Mitch (frank)ing Marner at 4th overall! That's crazy! Marner is a 1st overall caliber player. |

Yes but he's a winger so he should take less money than guys like Eichel despite outscoring him by 30 points! |
