Yeah usually you can tell when guys are out of their depth and just on a hot streak but I felt Gudbranson was playing legitimately solid hockey here with no real red flags hinting at regression. Elevating his role at all would probably be a disaster, though, due to his offensive limitations so his contract is still a problem even if he continues to play well. From an on ice product perspective I’ve liked him, but from a team construction perspective he’s a tough cap pill to swallow.

That's why I have hope too, he looked the part. The fact that when Gudbranson got the puck he had his head up and was looking for a pass and acted decisively was a surprise to me, I really expected him to be a mindless smash it off the boards type.

He wasn't really being spoonfed easy minutes here either. Sully tends to bury depth players to free up his top units for more offense an averaged 19 a game.

Saying all that, no, I wouldn't feel comfortable elevating him or am willing to put money on him not regressing, though maybe not as bad as Vancouver. And even a good third pair D tops out at 3M so we won't get value. As I keep saying, they'll need cap dumps next year too, and that's easier to do with one year left.
