So what leverage does Tkachuk have? He’s a rfa not ufa. - K-man25
Gaudreau couldn't be offer sheeted. He had literally two options. Accept what the Flames wanted to pay him or not play in the NHL.
Gaudreau would have 100% been offer sheeted if all they had to offer was 7 million. |
|
|
|
Agree. He’ll top the payroll scale, there’s no doubt. I just trust the sales pitch Tre is selling. - K-man25
So far he has been really good at RFA signings |
|

Yeah, BT wanted to save a bit of money to be able sign UFAs, In retrospect, giving johnny more money for more term would have been a better idea. I think BTs buyouts and other bad signings have handcuffed the team more than paying a bit more for the star players would have. - tincup
Only moves I didn’t really like were his UFA signings ...I don’t like the lucic trade but since I was going to give Neal this year I guess I’ll give lucic the same break ... |

Never said 7 mil, someone else said no less than 8. I trust Tre based on his great Rfa signings. Lindholm, Hanifan, were great savings last year. Bennett and Rittich this year Mangi next . BT has proven over and over he’s a shrewd negotiator with Rfa’s. Ufa’s not so much. |

7M had nothing to do with Tkachuk. It was just an example as to why Gaudreau had no leverage. No one could offer him 7M.
It doesn't really matter how good Treliving is at signing RFAs. If Tkachuk wants more than 8, someone will give him more than 8. Tkachuk probably has similar value to Aho, and everyone thought Aho's offer sheet was laughably low. If Tkachuk was willing to sign for what Aho signed for, teams would be lining up to offer sheet him.
Anything Calgary offers him is going to have to be over the 4 first-round picks threshold.

I think we heard this from you last time when Jonny, Monny and Gio were up for contracts. I think I’d put my trust in BT to negotiate a deal that works for both parties. |

Think the 2nd buyout window closes today - odd that we haven't heard anything on Stone yet... |

Why would they buy him out? He's a solid top six on most teams and a decent top four on a lot of teams. He's easy to trade if they need to trade him and needed insurance if they trade Brodie.

CALGARY FLAMES
Calgary Flames
PROJECTED CAP HIT : $76,826,708
PROJECTED LTIR USED : $0
PROJECTED CAP SPACE : $4,673,292
CURRENT CAP SPACE : $4,673,292
TODAYS CAP HIT : $76,826,708
ROSTER SIZE: 23
CONTRACTS: 42/50
RESERVE LIST: 60/90
Thats why...
As for easy to trade... Stone, Michael: M-NT $3,500,000, so no, not easy to trade.
Ever had a blood clot sport? Theres a reason it took essentially the entire season to recover from it and it ALWAYS a constant.
And maybe at one point in his career he was top 6, now I'd say the only team he'd be top 6 is Edmonton... |

Thursday is our 5 day buyout cutoff date as Rittch signed on Saturday.
Not totally opposed to keeping Stone to have a vet play with Valamaki on that bottom pairing. Just trade Frolik & Brodie & life is good on the Cap front. |

You're just straight-up wrong on all accounts. The Flames agree with me. They know by now if they'll be able to trade him, and they know if he'll have a top-six role if they keep him. If they don't think they'll be able to trade him or put him in a top-six role, they buy him out. It's pretty straight forward. The only other possibility is that they secretly know that he's not going to be medically cleared to play.

This. Stone is fine, but I'm not paying a guy $3.5 to sit in the press box 75% of the time. Worse yet, I wouldn't dress him over anyone in our top 6 next year, and arguably, Kylington is ahead of him on that list anyways. Buyout Stone, deal Brodie, Valiev is a useful piece as a callup if needed, and you can find plugs anywhere as your #7.
Gio Ras
Hanifin Hamonic
Valimaki Kylington
Sign one of Petrovic, Gryba, Sbisa, McQuaid to ride the bus in Stockton/7th dman if you the plan is not to develop Kylington at the NHL level and/or injury backup. Still have Valiev in the system and he'll likely get some NHL minutes at some point this year too.
As for trade partners, pickings are slim as far moving a legit top 4 in Brodie, much less a guy that barely played last year and has a significant(ish) cap hit. |

Where, pray tell, is Stone going to unseed a top 4 around the NHL? He's a 5/6 at best right now, and for the odd team with no org depth on D, he might slot into the 4. Pretty rare though.
And can you clarify the errors in his post?
The injury - accurate.
The contract - accurate.
Cap space - accurate.
So yes, going back to the original question, are they going to announce a buy-out today? You seem to be saying they either will or won't, but seem to be on both sides of the fence... |

Ah, right, was misreading the buyout window clause - 48 hour window starts 3 days after final case. |

I'm sure your phone blows up daily with calls from the Flames management group... you, Tanner and Eklund are the pulse of this league. |

If he was tradeable, he'd be gone by now. The question is, do they buy him out or is BT willing to add something significant to get a team to take him. Either way, the Flames, like a number of teams, are in a really tight spot right now. The next few days will be interesting. |

100%. The thing is I like the guy. He's a stay at home stable defender but he's like 80% of the "old school" defensemen out there. The issue is his cap hit. If he's at half that, ya, keep him because the 20 games he'll get as an insurance piece will be somewhat justified. He's not a top 6 guy anymore but is getting paid like one and I'm sorry, medically he'll be cleared to play but blood clots will be a constant for him for the rest of his life. Trust me I know.
Mind you, if Lucic and Neal can be moved at their cap hits, meh.... |
