Assuming they are capped out this season with Marner signed (Lets say 10 per), who's leaving that will open up 16-18 million for 2020-21 season?
- RoloTahmasee

I think Muzzin is gone. Not a Dubas type signing at all.

I don't see the Leafs keeping Muzzin. Both Liljegren and Sandin should both be ready to make the jump in 2020-21 at the latest. That will help.
- gergeswillems

That's the point I've been making. They will HAVE to make the jump and they will, as rookies, be needed to play big meaningful minutes out of the gate. There will be almost no margins for error

So, Barrie at 8 per, Reilly at 5 per and 6 other guys (need 8 D) all making just 1 million?

Right now there are 8 legit forwards on the team (assuming Marner) and 5 league minimum type question marks

you'd be looking at 6 more of those on D (2 rookies at least) plus one playing backup goalie

And keep in mind, the 1 million dollar guys that are good and everybody wants, become 2 million dollar guys and then you can't afford them

Vacouver has Petersson, Boeser horvat then a bunch of garbage. I'll take Mcdavid, Draisaitl RNH over that roster all day.

Marleau and Zaitsev were the contract issues. They were making only 200K less than Tavares. That's LOu for you, overpaying supporting guys like he's doing on the Island.

Is it a big deal Leafs "Traded assets" like their 3rd line C for a top-pairing D who somehow is making only 2.75 this season and Kerfoot?

Every team in the league moves out assets.

Kadri is the best hockey player in the deal, don't kid yourself. He may be a grade A douchebag but he's the best player in the deal.

Yup, and that's probably true for at least the next 3 seasons, probably 5. At this point though they don't look like a favourite to me moving forward.
- golfingsince

I still believe Matthews has only shown a glimpse of his true potential. The Leafs will go as far as he takes them. A player can't win a Cup by himself (well Roy did in '93) but when Matthews takes his game up another couple notches in the playoffs no team will be able to stop him. The rest of the team will follow. The quality depth is there.

I don't know if Liljegren and Sandin will play big minutes out of the gate but the Leafs have done a good job developing them. I think Sandin has a higher ceiling but Liljegren should still be a good top 4 guy.

I also think Matthews is fantastic, a much better player than Tavares. Having those 2 guys as your top 2 C's is fantastic. However, they poach minutes from each other. I don't pay much attention to the jealousy rumours.

But man you already had Matthews, Kadri , Nylander up the middle. Does anyone really believe Nylander can't play 2C?

I question if he can. Be also want him as Matthew's winger and would much rather have Tavares at center. They dont take any minutes from each other. They took minutes away from Kadri. This team needs Barrie more than Kadri and I'm fine with that. Acquiring Tavares cost nothing in assets. Love the signing.

I would rather Tavares and Barrie than just Kadri. Glad to have Kerfoot too. What would we do with cap space? Sign Myers? No thanks

I thought so too as 60 pt d men are harder to find than 60 pt centers.

That's a fair assessment. Maybe with that cap space you'd have Gardiner back, maybe you don't want him. Maybe you'd have more over the next 6 years.

No. Nylander is better suited to play wing. Babs doesn't trust him to play center anyway. I still think he puts up good numbers playing with Matthews this season and then gets traded for that top 4 dman they need.

So you are a bonafide idiot. Try looking at the season instead of the point totals for a team.

Like I said, 56, 58, 47.

The player isn't the problem, the pick is.

Nobody wants a well paid 3C until playoff time and you need both to shutdown the oppositions top line and you also need production out of the bottom 6

Kadri/Gardiner @ 9.5 million >>> Kerfoot/Barrie @ 11.5 (if Barrie gets resigned)

No. I'd take Barrie and Kerfoot over Kadri and Gardiner. Especially with Gard's back problems.

This year I would because theres more value there money wise, not really interested in Barrie at 8 per

One thing not being discussed is how a weak bottom 6 gets punked come playoff time when the Home Teams use last change

Then all those guys on ELC's and Vet minimums don't tend to look so hot out against other teams top lines

Kerfoot at this point isn't half the player Kadri is. Barrie is signed for 1 year, and the cost to the Leafs is an absolute steal.

They may have upgraded with Barrie/Gardiner but that's highly debatable.

They've really just punted on the cap for one season, and that cost a 1st round pick.

Kapanen was signed to a great contract, so that's a win.
