You were hoping for $7.5M in dead cap space next year??
A below market value trade with $2M retained would have been preferable. - Tonybere
But that obviously wasn’t there, so out of the buyouts, this is the one I wanted |

From Reddit:
1. Shattenkirk is the only buyout that works by itself this summer. Buying out Smith/Staal requires either a second buyout, a trade, or running less than a full roster through all of next year. (A Kreider trade also accomplishes the same goal. Trading Namestnikov/Strome would require a second move or shortened roster.)
2. The savings in 2020-21 from a Shattenkirk buyout isn't much worse than a Smith/Staal buyout. All three contracts have reduced savings in year 2 of the buyout. Buying out Staal only creates about $1.4m in cap space in 2020-21 compared to a Shattenkirk buyout. A Smith buyout only creates about $1m more in cap space in a Shattenkirk buyout. The amount of cap space created is a much, much, much more important criteria than dead cap created. Case in point: No one is talking about the amount of dead cap created in 2019-20 from a Shattenkirk/Smith/Staal buyout in 2019-20.
3. Our summer 2020 FA work isn't very significant. We have Georgiev and D'Angelo (assuming he takes a QO this summer) up for extensions. Then we have about 5 bottom-6 forward slots to fill. A Shattenkirk buyout leaves us with $16.7m to do that work. A Staal buyout gives us $18.1m to work with. Given the deals that need to be made, I don't think the extra $1.4m in cap space in 2020-21 is a significant factor.
4. The penalties in 2021-23 are between $1.0m and $1.4m for the three players. They're close enough in value that I think they are irrelevent.
Overall, a Shattenkirk buyout looks the best. We can roll into 2019-20 with a full roster, a clearer picture on the right side of our blue line, and with a little extra cap and roster flexibility to boot. A Shattenkirk buyout means that we get some extra cap space and the ability to send up to 5 waiver exempt players down to the minors outside of game and practice days in order to further shave off accumulated cap hit.
And shaving off cap hit is super important now. It means we can more easily deal with guys going on the IR (which offers no cap relief) as well as the LTIR and how it would push our performance bonus cap hits into 2020-21. (Performance bonuses at the end of the year fill up all remaining cap space and then roll over to the next year as a penalty. The closer you are to the cap ceiling, the more you have roll over. Using the LTIR for cap relief means that you are already above the cap ceiling, which rolls over all performance bonuses. Lastly, performance bonuses mainly come from ELCs, which we have a ton of.) And all of this is accomplished with one single move.
I wouldn't be surprised by a Shattenkirk buyout. We get the most value out of such a buyout in and of itself. Every other buyout needs something else to enable it. Do you think that we are going to get an okay offer for Namestnikov or Strome if we buy out Staal/Smith? Heck no, we will get squeezed there in a very obvious cap dump. That doesn't happen with a Shattenkirk buyout. It's better to try and get some assets for Namestnikov and Strome at the TDL, too. |

Would have rather seen Staal bought out. Staal is only ok on the PK. Shatty is better than Staal at this point - mdw7413
Maybe they thought they need a pk player over a pp player. With Trouba and ADA on the roster, Shatty's role is basically filled. Staal may suck, but he's still serviceable and has the tangibles you want in a locker room full of rookies. Plus the added savings. |

I would say after what Jimbo said and what MP just posted this was all about the $ |

Likely what they save on Shattenkirk, probbaly about $5 mil. But that depends on what happens with Beleskey, Smith, Fox, Regev, Hajek etc and before ADA and Lemiuex are signed. |

In lieu of making any other moves - trading Nam or Storme - agreed, unfortunately, little choice. Though I would have rather Staal than Shattenkrik get bought out. |

still not enough to sign Tony D, Lemieux and go into season with a little breathing room for callups
I think one more move needs to be made, but the desperation is all gone |

Got to think its either Strome or Nam. Think Tony D was probably doing a fist pump |

I'm happy Strome is still here. He's the perfect kind of asset you want in a continued rebuild. If he's really good, great we have a fine 2C for now. If he's just okay, ship him out at the deadline. Nam is going to have to fight for a spot in the bottom 6, but if he prevails and has a decent season, he also should be moved.
Rather than losing either in order to be cap compliant, they're now assets. |

Problem is statistically Strome can probably only go down and Stinky only go up. They both play hard and can both play center. If I had to chose I sell on Stromes high last year and keep stinky. |

I believe you meant INtangibles. I don’t really want these kids learning too much on ice stuff from Marc!

Marc Staal is going to be the penalty killer on the left side for one more year, Shatty couldn't fulfill that role |

Swedish head coach Tomas Monten said Olof Lindbom, who can’t catch a break, was taken out of today’s game as a precaution. Lindbom hardly played last season after dealing with a series of injuries (concussion, hip, knee). A 39th overall pick. #Rangers |

If nothing else, by getting rid of Shattenkirk, Gorton just guaranteed the Rangers a Stanley Cup in the next few years. See Capitals & Blues. |

I understand the decision, even more so with that reddit write up. Gotta say I was hoping to see Shattenkirk play with a chip on his shoulder. You know he's having a good season coming up. |
