I understand the decision, even more so with that reddit write up. Gotta say I was hoping to see Shattenkirk play with a chip on his shoulder. You know he's having a good season coming up. - JRR1285

If nothing else, by getting rid of Shattenkirk, Gorton just guaranteed the Rangers a Stanley Cup in the next few years. See Capitals & Blues. - jimbro83

Just wait until he signs with another local team and torments us for years to come. |

Fox is an upgrade. I meant Shat bringing it every night against us to prove he doesn't suck. |

Extremely disappointed in the Rangers front office with how we got to be cap compliant, feel like there were better ways to solve this, hope it works out but that dead cap space next year sucks |

What were the “better” ways, that wouldnt involve a team helping us? |

1 year Namestnikov was hard to get rid of? Buying out Smith was a harder option than Shatty? |

Clearly trading Nam without retaining salary wasnt happening the way NYR brass wanted it. The Smith thing has a two headed beast. Buying him out doesnt clear quite enough space to give the team cushion to sign ADA and Lemieux to their tenders. Also, Smith, unlike Shatty, can be sent down to AHL, so if hes playing like poop and they want to try out Rykov, they can. |

At 4 million for a career 30 point guy, ya. Smith if needed could play on the 4th line, as a 7th defenseman, or be sent down to the AHL. His cap hit alone also wouldn’t get us to be compliant this year, another move would have to be made. |

Gorton knows full well of cap ramifications next year with this buyout. NYR will have majority of players on current roster signed past next year, and those who's contracts will be up are gone, for r the most part. Cap won't be an issue next year
I think they are looking for this team to be hitting top speed and competing for Stanley Cup 22-23.. Buying out Shatty is best way for NYR to have a TON of $$ before that season. When Hank and Staal gone. |

$6 million dead space next season is a major inconvenience, Kreider is as good as gone |

The cap is an inconvenience for every team.
IF Kreider has a monster year, than yes, it might be hard to sign him to what he'll command on open market..More realistic is that he has another season of inconsistency scoring 20-30 G.
Him staying or going is only one of the many decisions to be made in attempting to win the cup. |

NYR will be freeing up approx. 20mill.. after the season with Belesky, Fast, Nam, Kreider, Mckegg, and many Hartford guys getting off the books. With Shatty buyout that leaves around 14 mill to sign him and/or others. |

Exactly, this $6 mil cap hit for next year won’t mean much, most of the team is under contract past next year |
