Based on the Rangers' history, they should never sign big name UFAs. The only one I can think of that worked out was Wayne Gretzky and I guess Chris Druery to a lesser extent.
Look at their history:
Fleury, Holik, Gomez, Redden, Richards, and now Shattenkirk.

Well, I generally don't believe in making decisions based on player(s) not working out in the past. The Rangers have had some misses no doubt, but Gomez turned into Ryan McDonagh, so it's hard not to view that overall transaction as a success. And hell, not only did he turn into Ryan McDonagh, but he also probably turned into Marion Gaborik, as the Rangers signed him with the free cap space the next day.
And then, Gaborik, who scored 40 goals twice with the Rangers turned into Brassard, who ultimately turned into Zibanjed.
The fruits of those unrestricted free agent trees were pretty darn good actually. And are still paying dividends for the Rangers.

First off, explain to me how Gomez was a failure. Second, you forgot Gaborik.
Richards wasn't atrocious but didn't come close to what he was paid. No excuses for Redden, Fleury and Holik. Jury still kind of out on Shattenkirk. Drury was worse than Gomez.
Panarin is better than all of the guys mentioned. Not really worried about him. I was not crazy about Drury or Gomez. Super excited for Gaborik and Richards but only one of those worked out. It's a risk, doesn't always pay off. |

I liked Theo a lot as a Ranger.
He can to the Rangers at 32 years old and put up 64, 74, and 63 points. Plus he was effective in other ways. |

I was really hoping the Yankees landed Stroman. Their starting pitching has been, uh...a giant flaming abortion lately, to put it as delicate as I can - eichiefs9
I hope they keep that up. Just betting the over in Yankees games is making me $$$$. That's at least 7 games in a row. |

Things should stabilize for them shortly. They have to get through another four game (in three days) series with the Sox at home after two at home against Arizona and then they get Orioles for three, Jays for four, Orioles for four (consecutively), and also have 5 against the A's and three against the Mariners at the end of the month. Plus they should, hopefully, significantly improve their rotation before the deadline. |
