Michael Russo also said on the Russo-Souhan show that Jake Gardiner has a somewhat long term handshake deal in place with a team that has to move out a high priced defenseman to make his cap hit fit.
So if any team dumps a big money D, they're probably signing Gardiner - gerbe75pts

I was just looking at Matt Hunwick's NHL.com page and I came across this:
Draft: 2004 BOS, 7th rd, 31st pk (224th overall)
How is that possible? |

I was hearing it is the NYR. As mentioned before by an insider here, the Sabres offered a 2-year deal, not a long term. Now I do understand that the offer could have changed.
Now looking at NYR cap situation, that means they would be spending around $31m for the 7 guys (that would include Gardiner at around $6m per). That would not include RFA Deangelo or the potential buyout of Shattenkirk (which would need to happen, 2019-20 cap hit would be around $1.5m and $6m next year! ouch!). This would still see NYR a bit above the cap ceiling.
So looking at that detail, it almost can't be NYR. They would really be against the wall. Talk about trying to speed up a rebuild, they are in cap hell in year 2 (?) of the rebuild. |

Didn't it just break one record for longest a top the Billboard top 100? And most of the other songs on the list for longest at #1 are not too great either (in my opinion, of course) . The Top 100 is not where good music is found, just the most commercialized. |

NYR are ~$4m above the cap right now, still need to sign Lemieux and Deangelo (those should be relatively low, maybe ~$1.2 for Lemieux and ~$2m for Deangelo), so that leaves them around $7m above the cap ceiling. Then a buyout of Shatts would save them around $5.1m (this year), so that means they are still $2 above, now burying a contract or two should get them about to the ceiling, but I am not sure where they can get Gardiner in at ~$5m+ in there. They would need to trade a few pieces to make it happen. |

Compensatory picks used to be awarded for any drafted players who weren’t signed
It went something like,
If u drafted a player in round 3, pick 20...
(and then he didn’t get signed)
then in the next draft you’d get your compensatory pick at spot 20 in round 4
So a round later
This stopped in the mid2000s i believe
Probably after the new CBA was agreed to after the lockout of ‘04 I’m guessing
*that’s how i remember it anyways
But what do i know?
I’m drunk & can’t reach the top shelf |

Thanks, I know they still exist (I think) if you take an NCAA player in the first round and they don't sign with you, but I had no idea they used to be so common. |

No worries
I think it used to be for every round?
I don’t remember exactly how it went,
but I’m pretty sure it was something similar to what i laid out |

We'd have gotten a 3rd round pick in 2022 if Eichel didn't sign |

Anybody know anything about a young kid Conor Garland RW from the Yotes?
47 points in 70 games between NHL and AHL.
More than ppg in Tucson and 0.5ppg in NHL
EDIT: he is my new covet for an under the radar value trade. Botts would be great to get him. - Der Kaiser
I don’t know this player, but thanks for putting him on the radar. I don’t expect JB to make a big, high-profile move. But this type of acquisition would be both savvy and reasonable. And in a much needed position. |

Meh.
5th round pick, age 23.5.
O.50 PPG pace in AHL for 2-1/2 seasons, but did produce at slightly over 1.0 ppg in 1/3 of season in last year AHL...and about 0.35 in 1/2 season in NHL.
Maybe a late bloomer.
Give them like Scandella and a 4th, sure. |
