NYR are ~$4m above the cap right now, still need to sign Lemieux and Deangelo (those should be relatively low, maybe ~$1.2 for Lemieux and ~$2m for Deangelo), so that leaves them around $7m above the cap ceiling. Then a buyout of Shatts would save them around $5.1m (this year), so that means they are still $2 above, now burying a contract or two should get them about to the ceiling, but I am not sure where they can get Gardiner in at ~$5m+ in there. They would need to trade a few pieces to make it happen.

Yep - they're getting rid of Shatts to get closer to the ceiling this year, they can't take on another $5m/yr conttacy, even if they traded Kreuter

I think a buyout is coming, however next season it would cost them $6m against the cap and $1.4m for two years after that. Add $1.5m for the Girardi and Spooner buyouts and that's $7.5m in dead cap space next year. To me, I think it would be a much better idea to trade Staal or Shatts along with a 1st to a team that has the cap space to absorb the hit or buyout like the Marleau deal.

I was just looking at Zach Parise stats. He's had 2 great years and 11 good-to-mediocre years. Why would anyone trade for him at 35 when he has 6 years left?

Should the NHL stop these types of trades? I mean, the rich get richer and the cheap teams that want to get to the cap floor take on these deals to get there. This is a bad deal for Ottawa (minus the cap hit, to get to the cap floor).

I understand the need for TB to move Callahan's contract, but they now have 4 goalies. I see Domingue being moved. Possibly to a team like Columbus.

How could they?

Ottawa will just say "we value the type of veteran leadership Callahan brings to our young roster"

No, they shouldn't. But what gets me is the guy is going to be on LTIR anyway. So what's the point?

Callahan, under contract through this season at a $5.8 million cap hit, announced earlier this off-season he will not play again after being diagnosed with a degenerative back disease. He will join Marian Gaborik and Clarke McArthur on long-term injured reserve with the Senators, raising their LTIR total to $15.3 million.

Yes indeed. A player on LTIR should not be able to be traded. However, I could see a team who has taken advantage of teams by taking the contract and the team trading the contract would both disagree. It's the middle teams that would be the only ones that have a problem with it. And the fans.

They now have 10 mil in space and can use another 8.1 mil in overage during the offseason. It gives them more time to figure out how to fit all the pieces under the cap.

So Tampa's 5th round pick and the Sens 6th round pick should be about 3-5 picks apart. I don't even see the point in swapping those two picks.

They sure did.

They’ll owe him very little actual dollars as I’m sure that contract is insured.

They did, but at the same time, it doesn't really affect them. They plan on being at the bottom anyway. You could argue they also hurt the Leafs by letting Tampa be more competitive.
