Elie grew up about an hour and 15 minutes from Ottawa and an hour and a half from Montreal. Maybe he just grew up hating Buffalo and has no desire to play here. He's probably hoping to get awarded a deal that the team doesn't like and they buy him out. |

Paul Fenton fired as Wild GM. Interesting timing..... |

Trade was made because insurance will pay most of Callahan’s contract.
Will/Can Ottawa not put him on LTIR and just use the cap hit to get to the floor and he is just the “13th forward”
Wonder how that would affect insurance payouts. - ImThatGuy
You don't use LTIR unless you absolutely have to. There are serious downsides to using it. Ottawa will just put him on IR, and like you said, 'enjoy' the (nearly?) cost free cap hit.

The only part I do not like in the sens Tampa deal is that the sens didn’t get anything in return. No value at all.
Atleast the hurricanes got value for Marleau. So it felt like the leafs paid to get the cap relief
The sens got nothing - Sabretooth9
Sens add $3.4m in cap space, however with insurance picking up 80% of Callahan's salary they will actually only be on the hook for $940k. Condon was due to make $3m in salary. So adding cap but saving $2m in actual salary does have a significant value for a cheapskate like Melnyk.

Paul Fenton fired as Wild GM. Interesting timing..... - Lilroot9
I follow the wild somewhat closely as my favorite WC team. I thought at the time that it was a mistake to fire Fletcher. Yes, he botched the expansion draft, but he was a pretty solid GM for them overall. You could even argue that keeping Staal was more important to them than keeping Tuch/Haula. Yes, that is a bit of a stretch.
Fenton has been a disaster
Absolutely no vision there
My speculation as to "why now" would be that either he wants to trade Parise and they won't let him, or he doesn't want to trade Parise and ownership does. Or his terrible trade history just sunk in with the owner |

Theres an interview with Parise in the athletic where he talks about how his time is running out and the wild simply not being that good. Wonder if that had anything to do with it? |

Would have to be something major to earn getting fired in 14 months lol. |

Good thoughts. Parise is probably the most untradeable contract in the league right now. My guess is he wants to rebuild and ownership does not. That should have been ironed out when they hired him - that was a team going nowhere. |

Yeah, as the owner, when the guy you paid $100 million says "we suck and I wouldn't mind moving on," something is going to happen |

Some picks were involved also. - jochfr
Callahan’s real $$$ owed this year is 4.7mil
Condon’s is 3.0mil
So for paying the extra 1.7mil,
Ottawa basically trades up from early in the 6th round to late in the 5th
For a team like Ottawa that doesn’t wanna spend $$$, that’s a pretty crappy deal
Botts should be on the phone about Sobatka |

"insurance will pick up 80% of that, which means the Sens will be on the hook for around $940,000."

80% of Callahan’s deal is paid by insurance so Ottawa is paying like 940k and taking on a big cap number to hit the floor.
Ottawa did Tampa a huge solid.

Ok... this makes much more sense now
Totally understandable trade from Ottawa’s POV to save the actual dollars paid out
And Tampa can bury most of Condon’s Cap hit |

I didn’t realize at first about Insurance coving his salary
Makes way more sense now
Still feel like Ottawa could’ve done better than just moving up 5-10spots late in the draft though

Unless Ottawa retained salary Tampa is on the hook for the full 3 mil in actual dollars.
Per cap friendly they are burring 1.075 mil of his 2.4 cap hit. |
