You can still max it out, though, like the NBA is doing.
I think it works both ways. The stars will get paid, but the gap between them and the "good" or even "very good" players will be wider, as it should be. - buffalofan19
They need to get rid of guaranteed contracts.
Allow for the reworking of deals. |

Then Philly, Rags, Leafs, and Canadiens overpay for everyone again.
It’ll be pre 04/05 all over again. - dadeadhead
We're one of those teams now. If Pegula owned the team before the cap was instituted, we probably would have a super team |

I think money is more of an issue for them then what one thinks. |

I don't think the PA goes for that without getting rid of the hard cap. The trade-off with guaranteed contracts is lower salaries across the board. Without the guaranteed money, they're going to want the ability to be paid more. |
|
|
|
Sure... but they could’ve essentially gone over the Cap by 5.8mil if they needed to
That’s my point
Go over the Cap by up to 5.8mil
Or
Bury Condon & lose 1.3mil in Cap Space
Curious decision by Tampa unless they need that extra “overage” space NOW
And then still have some kind of salary dump or 2 yet to come - jdfitz77
Not looking to debate this. Hopefully you've seen that it's exceptionally difficult to get the maximum possible relief and that there's value in not having to juggle LTIR for the entire season.

I think it's "Yes" and "No". I still think the O'Reilly/July 1 fiasco was more of a matter of Pegula's ego than not being able to afford it or some sudden epiphany of fiscal responsibility.
However, if the Sabres aren't turning a profit, there could also be issues there. I know it will never happen, but I would love to see all pro sports teams' Financial Statements become public, just like publicly traded companies. |

In 1990 the LA Kings had the highest payroll in the NHL.
$7.46 million.......

I was about to make a comment along the lines of good luck convincing the Union that this is relevant. |

DD said it earlier. This move bought them time. They can now go about $8 million over the cap if they need to after Point et. al. are signed. - buffalofan19
Right
Bought them time
But still hurts their bottom line by the 1.3mil in Cap Space they have to use to bury Condon
This trade essentially just made Tampa Cap limit go from 81.5mil to 80.2mil to fit all the guys on their regular season roster |

Not really any different then a team who has no one on LTIR and is right up against the Cap
LTIR basically lets them wipe Callahan off their books
I know that’s a simplification,
but it’s what ends up happening |

He’d probably be making 15mil a year if he were playing today - jdfitz77
His prorated for his final year was $9.22 which placed him 6th in the league. |

But it is significantly different, so why over-simplify? That's why you're not seeing TB's side of this. |

If Gretzky was playing now, I'm not sure the league has the same CBA it does now. The players probably have more leverage. |

No, it doesn't. Callahan's hit counts no matter if he's on LTIR or not. They save like $4.5M. Callahan at $5.8M and Condon's buried hit at $1.3M. |

He'd be hard capped at 20% of the ceiling; if McDavid was a $12.5M player 2 years ago, Gretzky is worth more than twice that. And since you can't pay a player that much under the CBA, he'd be hard capped. |

Wow. Sounds like I should be happy the Giants went for Daniel Jones then with six instead of trying to trade for Rosen. |

Ryan Fitzpatrick is 8000 yards away from being in the top 25 all time in yards.
Let that sink in for a minute. |

I don’t think it is significantly different
If Tampa has everyone signed except Point,
with 4.0mil of Cap Space left
Putting Callahan on LTIR would allow them to use whatever portion of his Cap hit they want/need to get Point signed
So they could sign him to a 9.8mil per deal & still be Cap compliant
That’s really not any different than if they traded Callahan & didn’t take back Condon
Either way...
that 5.8mil is available for them to use
Making it more complicated than that is what’s unnecessary imo |

Like I said, though, if Gretzky plays today (assuming in his prime), the CBA isn't structured the way it is. The Union has a lot more leverage. |
