I figured it would be in the 1.7 to 2 mil range - homiedclown
for a back up goalie i think that is a reasonable contract in the NHL right now.. he isn't a great back up but he can be serviceable and has shown flashes |

This isn't what the team would give him in contract negotiations, though. - Powerslave
I get it, but that is no raise from what he made last year. (Cap hit was 750 made 800k)
I’m surprised it is that low.
If all 4 Sabres go to arb that’s more than the rest of the NHL Combined. Botts gotta be careful about low balling players. May not be a good look. |

the big thing, ullmark and e-rod never should have gotten to arbitration
pretty easy to figure out where both land
mccabe, I kind of get it, could be a 2 mil guy, could be a 3.3 mil guy

He's not low balling players.
He's simply retaining their rights via the qualifying offer.
It was the player who chose the arbitration. |

Not a lunch box exactly, but I bring lunch mostly every day in a small cooler. I eat in front of my laptop while I work. I go out or buy lunch occasionally, but the more time I spend doing that, the longer my day is. Someday you'll understand. Maybe. |

Qualifying offers must have been accepted by July 1st.
Arbitration filings had to be in July 5th.
That's no time to negotiate a contract.
This mentality that Botterill is "low balling" players is just not correct. |

How is he not lowballing here? Team offered a number with technically no raise.
why are there more Sabres players filing than the rest of the NHL combined.
That doesn’t seem odd to you? |

They can negotiate a contract all year and right after the season ends. So the little time thing is not correct. |

The team merely extended the QO to retain their rights. If they don't, they lose the player. There's no low balling. Every team in the league extends QO's to their RFA's to retain their rights.
Maybe the player wanted to go to arbitration all along. Felt he had a better chance to make more.
This assumption that he's playing hard ball is just that, assumption.

Why are you assuming it's the TEAM?
Perhaps the player had arb in their sights the whole time. |

Without knowing who their signings are going to be? Who they're trading for? What THOSE contracts are going to be?
Please.
That's a great way to hamstring yourself into cap trouble, by negotiating with non essential players in-season. |
