cool story bro

I've been boxing for fun for years and enjoy reading about and watching the great ones...

- 21peter

Yeah I always loved hearing my dad and Grampa talk about the all time greats. I tried to follow boxing when I was younger but Don King and Bob Arum basically ruined the sport.

It's a big reason why UFC exploded and became so popular. Too much match fixing and too much control over the boxers. My dad loved Smokin' Joe Frazier and told his friends he'd beat Ali back in their first fight in 1971. They thought he was crazy. πŸ˜‚ He always told me "styles make fights."

Ali had not boxed in 3 years as he was stripped of his title in because he wouldn't fight in Vietnam. It's sad because Ali lost 3 of his prime years when he could've been knocking more opponents out.

So Ali was ahead of his time. Great talker. Super intelligent. He basically promoted his own fights. He called Frazier a paper champion because he never beat him to earn it. Ali did have a few warm up fights before facing Frazier in 1971 at Madison Square Garden. πŸ˜‰

But Frazier was in much better shape. He was hungry and his straight ahead body punching style was hard for Ali to handle. Ali liked to dance and counter punch. He perfected the rope a dope style which later enabled him to beat Foreman. Ali was so fast and quick. Not as quick and fast as he was before his title was stripped though. He underestimated Frazier and got beat.

Ali won the rematch but my favourite boxing fight of all time is the Thrilla in Manilla. My GOD what a great fight that was! Frazier couldn't see out of either eye because they were both swollen shut. Frazier would never quit. So much heart.

Ali wouldn't quit either but when Frazier wouldn't answer the bell for the 15th round you can see Ali fall to the canvas in his corner after he knew he'd won. It was a golden age for boxing that's for sure! ☺

A great movie was Joe and Max. Great insight on Joe Louis and Max friendship. Cinderella Man is a top 5 movie too

I was a big Ali fan but it sure looked like Liston took a dive. Ali was screaming at him to get up because I think he knew that he didn’t hit him at all.
My guess would be the mob got to Liston.

Yeah the Black Shylocks. He drops to the canvas then is seen taking a car to the airport where he then disappears for 3 years. When he died he was found with more than 20 needles in his dead body. His wife said he was terrified of needles.

Yeah that was a big upset when Max Schelming beat Joe Louis. Louis won the rematch. Louis used to have his "bum of the month club" where he'd just knock everyone out. πŸ˜‚ The Brown Bomber.

Louis went bankrupt largely because the US government taxed him heavily when he fought exhibition matches overseas during the war.

Joe and Max became good friends. I think Max made it rich buying into Coca Cola and helped Joe out. Rocky Marciano was a great fighter but he beat Joe Louis when he was an old man. He came out of retirement because he needed the money and was embarrassed.

I've watched all Ali's fight multiple times, but for me the greatest boxing was in the 80's when Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hitman Hearns, Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard was fighting each other! Just f'n fantastic fights!

Yes! I was just a kid then but I recall that fight! All offense and no defense! The closest thing to the Rocky movies! Both guys throwing straight bombs. I can recall my dad getting up to leave after the first minute. I asked "where are you going Dad?" He said "These guys can't keep this up. It'll be over soon." He was right. Hagler won but I still think Hearns had him on queer street (boxing term) early in the first round. He didn't capitalize. Tommy Hit Man Hearns! He was a gunslinger! Win big or lose big!

You mentioned some other great fighters too. DURAN embarrassing Sugar Ray Leonard in the first fight. Stone hands Duran. But Sugar Ray came back in the second fight by changing his style. He embarrassed Duran. He'll never be forgiven by his countrymen for quitting. "No Mas." He was a great fighter though.

It's like what happened with Liston in the first Ali fight. Liston was so frustrated with Ali's style he didn't know how to counter it. Same with Duran in the second Leonard fight. He was so used to being the bully that he quit when he could no longer be the bully.

I still watch these fights on youtube. Problem is I get so in to it that it's hard to calm myself down when it's over! πŸ˜‚ Jerry Quarry is another guy my dad used to tell me about. He just wasn't quite good enough to beat the best but he sure had alot of heart.

I still recall the look on Kenny Norton's face after Ali got the decision in one of their fights. He even broke his jaw! Norton never got over losing that fight. I don't know how Ali got the decision there. I really don't! πŸ˜‚

That's what I mean. Quarry was a very good fighter in a great era of legendary boxers. YouTube has created a monster within my Dad. πŸ˜‚ Each time I visit him he's still reliving the glory days of those great fights. He's 65 years old now and I keep telling him to calm down or he'll stroke out! πŸ˜‚

Hey, Tanner! What's with insulting Trump fans? Why are Trump fans unstable? You're the one who's melting down over a few, well-deserved zingers. Don't be such a damn girlyman.

That's such a random take. It might be better to buy the Coyotes with your credit card and update the team CD collection to 1995. Invite all past, present and future Coyotes to Tanner's rented apartment to eat pizza and watch Demolition Man. Good times.

You're on to something here. If we assembled past and present coyotes onto one team and watched them while listening to bad music from the late 90s,would they win the president's trophy? That's more important than the Stanley cup after all.

The even more important question, would Arcobello and Rundblad edge out Roenick and Numminnen for the greatest at their position?

I believe the answer is yes. A combination of Runblad, Renting, REM and Randomness would be too much for any team to handle.

Don't sleep on the Yotes, they've managed to acquire talent like Pronger, Datsyuk and Hossa in recent years.
