I was referencing his time in Pittsburgh where he was in charge of the cap and did an undeniably great job for them.
And he has done well with the cap here so far.
I seriously think we’re forgetting the mess he inherited.
He took over a bottom 10 cap team with 3 core players to speak of, one which wanted out
He has 2 legit criticisms that are 100% on him IMO
1. Housley
2. Not trading Ristolainen - sbroads24
on the cap and pitt thing. did he sign Jack Johnson or was that after he came to buffalo |

After, trading for Sheary/Hunwick gave them the space to make that mistake.

recycling GMs every 3 years isn't going to be good.. GMTM was a mess and i understand firing him.. we need to see improvement this year - SabresFaninIndiana
Where is the line drawn which reflects adequate improvement?
Playoffs?
20+ pts?
>21st place finish?

Stumble into 2 HoF centers, and every associated with the team gets insane amounts of credit....even Ted Black.

a career-high 37 games for the Sabres
shooting for 2.65 million
"I've played under 50 games in the NHL; I think 2.65 million is a bargain for my services."
I know it's a negotiation tactic, but after the E-Rod award, can we see them going under 2M?
Now I'm pinching pennies, but these things start to add up. 1 - 1.5M is fair, I think. Guy hasn't done poop. |

If Eichel is healthy, the bar should be set at +/- 90 points imo. That's like 10th in the conference. It is such a low bar, really. If Eichel is healthy and they finish below 85 points, I think there should be a conversation about Botterill's job. Anything below 80 points should be an easy decision imo. |

Obviously, you need top-end talent to win a Cup. However, to have those two Hall of Famers, signed to Hall of Fame contracts, and to still figure out a way to fit Phil Kessel under the cap and still fill out the roster with enough to win 2 Cups is very good work on his part. |

meaningful games after the deadline, competing for a playoff spot
if it's anything like the last 50 games of this past season, this team is f@cked and cursed

I know, but only 2 were with Kessel.
If I recall, the 2009 cup team wasn't exactly a salary-cap problem. They had a lot of guys on rookie/early deals. |

There’s two reasons Botterill could/should lose his job.
Krueger is a disaster
His acquisitions end up being disasters.
I’d bet on neither.

Sure, if you mean the only answer that counts.
I think 90% of the posters have their own answer on what will cause them to give Botts a thumbs up or thumbs down. That is the "answer" I'm trying to understand. |

Krueger is a huge wild card.. could be a great pick up or it could be a disaster.. or obviously in between..
i think they need to be playing in meaningful games up to the last 5 games or so for it to be an improvement. |
