this particular player had nothing in common with any of the others
they had to get under the salary cap, his buyout helped that happen more than any other
when they used a compliance buyout on Brad Richards, it was mainly because the league changed the rules in the new CBA about how the cap hits for front loaded contracts worked moving forward
in both cases, if there weren't a salary cap, they would have stuck around, but every year there will be players dumped because of it. The more money a player makes, the more of a chance it could happen.
Rangers aren't the only team who deal with it - jimbro83

You want to see a funny potential buyout. Even if Calgary waits a year, even with Edm retaining some salary, it's bad

wow, I never noticed that before that capfriendly lists both team's buyout cap hits |

Yeah, what you said is true, but it would have bought them some time. You can be 10% over the cap before the season, and you could see if the RFAs just sign their tenders (I don't think they would, I mean why would they want to be paid pennies). Still think during camp, some teams get injuries and Strome or Names will be as good as gone.
Knowing for sure that you have enough space is worth something I guess. - 2sticks1puck
they have 0 leverage and have not been offer sheeted so why wouldn't they sign? it's sign or don't play their call. |

I tell ya, if any team wanted Tony D or Lemieux right now they could easily grab them for nothing |

They have very little leverage, but they could always play in the KHL or Europe for more money. I don't think either one commands a ton, but I'm pretty sure at least ADA signs for more than the tender.
I could see in the future, more players pulling a Nylander and waiting it out. Teams will either cave, or the player can just go to Europe. |

they could do that, but the rangers still hold their NHL rights. |

They would have to choose those teams/cities over us though, right? I doubt either would choose another place to play given their roles on the team, the direction of the team, and where they'r playing. But hey, money talks and making 2x more is tempting. |

There's currently 30+ buyouts league wide, but yup it's only an NYR problem
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-history - rrentz
Looks like 11 this year before Shattenkirk but it is certainly a league wide issue.
While Kevin wasn't a Ranger for too long many of these buyouts are for older guys who were signed with too much term. So while maybe not applicable in this case the long term contracts are just horrible for the league.

It never ceases to amaze me how seemingly every player wants to skate on Broadway despite the endless list of players that have had their careers die at MSG. Its like a morbid graveyard of once great players that arrived to thunderous applause only to receive a paupers burial a short time later. RIP Shatty. We hardly knew thee. - WayneZ

Not so much getting under the cap, we have enough expiring contracts for that not to be a problem. It's that we really won't be able to add anyone that summer. If Strome really does build on last year, we'd probably have to trade his rights or do some creative moves. |

Corey Perry buyout very similar to the Shattenkirk
Two completely different buyouts. Perry was bought out because of his decline in production. Shatty was bought out so the Rangers can become cap compliant. |

With Trouba and Panirin and hopefully Kreider resigned we won't need to add anyone. Let the kids grow and earn the spots |

Rangers are fairly notorious for bridge deals if he plays well sign him to a certain amount with the knowledge he will be getting a better deal as long as he plays at the same level |

I am no capologist if that is even a word.
But why not buy out Marc Staal??? Dude has a case for being one of the worst defenseman in the entire NHL.
Like to me it is so insane that they somehow couldn't buy out stall and trade someone else for literally future considerations or something around that trade route. - classic321
Capologist.....I like it. But Shatts seriously is not tradable??? Even retaining 1.7M. The guy is one season removed from multiple 0.5ppg seasons, and at 4.95M he is still unmovable? That second year cap hit of 6M is just horrible! Personally, I would retain 50% and trade him if I had too. |
