I am sure Jeff Gorton tried to move Nam and maybe Shattenkirk and didn't have a taken. Dealing Nam. as I wrote, still likely would have required a second move, especially if salary had to be eaten. Moving Kirk next year, after the $2 million bonus was paid July 1, likely would have been easier because the actual salary would have been just $2 million. But Gorton probably pursued every avenue before deciding to buy out Shattenkirk, because if not, he would have been derelict in his duties as a GM.
We all -or at least most of us - may not be happy with this decision. But to presume it was made in a vacuum with no other options attempted is fallacy. |

I'd like to see what Raddysh could do quite honestly. He's 23 and it would be now or never for him. He was about a .5 ppg player in he A. Nothing spectacular, but he could become a semi decent trade chip if he could fill in. |

I am certain the team has a plan |

yeah, it's not a comparable deal, none of the trades where LTIR players have been traded have any similarity to the players we have or the situation we were in - jimbro83

Maybe I'll get to the garden in my Staal jersey this year where Staal and G are shutting down Malkin and Crosby, reminiscent of 6 or 7 years ago. |

That's entirely possible. Capfriendly makes it seems like its for buyouts period. If the Rangers could have bought out Strome and didn't, probably pretty foolish on their parts honestly. - 2sticks1puck
Yes, at 3.1 no team would even be willing to give us a 7th for Strome. Buyout would’ve definitely been better. Here’s a guy, that actually has some value, and all we do is talk about how we should’ve bought him out. |

I think what we have been doing is going through every possible scenario the Rangers could have done other than what they did
dont take the names personally
I do believe they did the best thing they could have done given the circumstances |

11, with that said, I think we should’ve made a bunch of smaller moves and tried to build up his value a bit. |

At the risk of coming off like a troll, I thought it would be interesting to revisit the blog (and comments) where the Rangers signed Shattenkirk:
https://hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=86218
It really does hammer home one important fact:
99 times out of 100, UFA signings turn out badly.
And it also probably explains why RFAs this summer are unwilling to sign for less than they think they are worth. Teams are handing out stupid money to UFAs, who inevitably fail to live up to their contracts. |

True. People ink bad contracts. If the devs are were near the ceiling, there would be discussion of a buyout. The only thing that is a bit of a joke in Rangerland, is the fact that the past couple blogs have been like drawing straws. "We buying out Shatts, Smith, or Staal?", and "which one goes to the AHL?". It is just nuts, as that is 16.7M in bad contracts, yet you go out and add two more massive long-term deals. Great players, just odd timing given this teams contract situation. - bikeguy99
I feel calling Staal's contract a bad one is playing fast and loose with the truth. At the time of the signing he was an absolute defensive power. No one could see the injury troubles ahead. It's unfortunate that he is a shell of his former self, but that is not Sather's or Gorton's fault. It's just life. |

Well he took a discount. He was a 45-50 pt defenseman. He had injuries both years with us. poop happens sometimes.
He didn't get bought out because it was a horrible contract, he got bought out to make cap space. |

The guy couldn’t play defense, which is usually somewhat important when ur a defenseman. That’s not just his time here, WSH after paying a 1st+ for him at the deadline wanted to scratch him in the playoffs bc of how bad he was in his own end. |
