It's funny, Shatty was known for his offensive game but I never saw a Ranger with a softer shot before. Even Staal has a harder one - TPC
Yandle. Wrist shot from the point 89% of the time. |

At the risk of coming off like a troll, I thought it would be interesting to revisit the blog (and comments) where the Rangers signed Shattenkirk:
https://hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=86218
It really does hammer home one important fact:
99 times out of 100, UFA signings turn out badly.
And it also probably explains why RFAs this summer are unwilling to sign for less than they think they are worth. Teams are handing out stupid money to UFAs, who inevitably fail to live up to their contracts. - Atomic Wedgie
next put up the blog when you guys signed Marleau

The guy couldn’t play defense, which is usually somewhat important when ur a defenseman. That’s not just his time here, WSH after paying a 1st+ for him at the deadline wanted to scratch him in the playoffs bc of how bad he was in his own end. - nyrangers9479
Here's what frustrates me when fans say that. We KNEW he couldn't play D when we signed him. That's not his game. I was never the biggest Shatty fan at any point in his career, but I had no expectations on his defense accumen when we got him. What made Shatty a buyout candidate was that he wasn't living up to the contract offensively. Burns can't play D a lick either, but no one cares when you are getting 80-90 pts a year. If Shatty was getting 50 pts a year, no one would care you have to cover for him. |

I don't even answer anymore. He has said this probably a million times. Anyone who thinks Shatty was brought in for his awesome defense needs to stop smoking crack |

The actual blog isn't that interesting.
But if you want a quick look at how Leafs fans felt, you may want to check out the Hockeybuzz Official Leafs Prediction Thread for that year:
https://www.hockeybuzz.co...read.php?thread_id=147242
I think I nailed it:
Marleau, Patrick: I really think we could have spent our money elsewhere. His stats will look fine at the end of the year, so people will think that justifies his signing, but we would have been better off using the money to re-up JVR and promoting a kid.

So your ok with making your highest paid dman a guy that can’t play D? I don’t care he had 45-50 point seasons when he can’t cover a guy in his own end and is a turnover machine. And let’s stop acting like everyone knew he was bad defensively, the arguments we had with ppl saying I was blowing out of proportion just how bad he was defensively can be pulled up in just about any blog from 2 years ago. |

It's really just a 1 season thing. After 20-21 we will have loads of cap space. After the nightmare dead cap season, Shatty's dead cap declines to like 1 million. - 2sticks1puck

A lot of teams do. I'm not going to dispute we have had to do things on occasion. |

Shouldn't everyone stop smoking crack, regardless of their opinion on Shattenkirk? |
