Ummm, no.
Maybe before buying out Shattenkirk, but now NYR is looking at having about $1-1.5M free AFTER signing ADA and Lemieux.
At first glance, I would assess this as just another one of Ek's headlines. It made sense to move Kreider before buying out Shatty. Now, keeping him and either signing an extension or trading him at the deadline is the more likely scenario.
So, the Rag$ don't need leverage.

I don't think so dude. CapFriendly shows the Rags only have $1M in cap space as of NOW. https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/rangers . That's WITHOUT signing ADA or Lemuix. ADA is going to get at least $3M after Pionk and Butcher's signings. That doesn't include whatever Lemuix gets and you can't spend completely to the cap ceiling, you have to have some cap space for performance bonuses. Kakko alone could earn up to $3.575M in bonuses this year. And there are other players that could earn bonuses on top of Kakko.

So no, even if it's not to the Oilers, the Rags HAVE to move some more cap out of Broadway.

the Rags have no leverage. they need cap space. if the oilers offer garbage, they'll have to take it or let go of DeAngelo. I'm ok with them losing DeAngelo

Why all the concern for the rangers cap space! Just worry about your own team sparky!

I'm surprised Ek said this publicly.

I'm honestly shocked he's even reporting on the Rangers. How dare he let that jersey be the center of attention on the homepage

I'm not worried, my best friend is a Rags fan and unlike the moron Rags fans on this site, he's actually realistic about his favorite team. And as much hateful and spiteful crap Rags fans talk about NJ on here and Twitter, to now clutch your pearls like you're a victim when someone else points out problems for your team is a joke.

I don't follow this part of the game as closely as some, but let me try to refute some of your points.

Both ADA and Lemieux are RFA's without arbitration rights, so unless they are offer sheeted they will take what they are given or go play overseas. They will not be given $3M. They are both coming off entry level contracts, and only need an additional 10% on qualifying offers, I believe. So, lets say $2.5M total to sign them both.
Brendan Smith and Beleskey will be buried in the AHL, so that will save ~$1.3M each, so with that NYR are already below the cap with everyone signed.
Kakko and others may hit bonuses this season (and no one will be upset by it!), but even if there is no room under the cap for those, the remainder gets shunted to next years cap. Not ideal, but certainly helpful for today.
Plus, even without making another deal, which I think they will anyway, they can play the game of sending some of their 5 roster players who don't need to pass through waivers to down to Hartford every time they have a couple days off. Doing so will shave some money of the salaries each time.
Long story short, they are just fine as of today and only going to be in better shape moving forward.

There are very few Rangers fans on here trashing NJ. While most have an instinctual hatred, most are excited for the renewed rivalry we seem to be headed for!
And above that, all but about 3 Rangers fans that frequent this site are pumped beyond belief for what has transpired in the last 16 months and for what is coming up!!

Not sure why people have to ask what the Oilers have that the Rangers want.

The Rangers want Picks, Prospects and cap space. Kreider would likely fetch a 2nd round pick and a prospect. I dont see him landing a 1st.

True. But, are the Oilers in a position to give away picks and prospects? That's where this rumour doesn't make sense to me.

Hey, when you are done sending Smith to the AHL, and buy out Staal, who do you want to sign next???????? So many options. Good luck going from a lottery team, straight to an overcapped team that will be chasing a wild-card at best.

Was that picture of Kreider taken immediately after telling him he could potentially be an oiler?

Your hatred is clouding your vision.
You are right about a couple of things though, I'll give you that.
Smith is gong to the AHL. And we will be chasing a wild card (I actually think we'll be chasing 3rd in the Metro) - THIS SEASON.
Next year when the kids have grown a little and the next top prospects are getting a look, we'll be moving up from there!!
Don't worry, we will still remember to save you tickets for playoff games. You remember the playoffs, don't you?

Newark is 14 miles from NYC. You think there is any difference in air quality?

Also the Ranger problem is they probably can’t resign Kreider. He’s 28 and was the 2nd highest scorer on your team last year. Put up the same number of goals as Panarin coincidentally. He’s exactly the type of player you’d keep if you could.
