My point was that it was cherry picked though.. Because it was. And you can't really say do a little research to me when your "research" consisted of one arbitrary list that was from LAST YEAR. I also don't have anything against Laine, and in time will probably be the better of the two. I also never said Skinner is better. Just showed that the "source" you used was faulty. Even if you assumed it was after the season ended, how could you remotely justify Skinner not in the top 100, and patty kane below Kopitar by any stretch.
- SDSabre

You still haven't googled nhl top 100 players huh?

Take your pick of the articles. Do this yourself. Find any national article that favors skinner.

Not 1 has skinner anywhere near/ or ahead of laine.

It's cool being a homer, but take a national look at the 2 players.

Check out the fantasy hockey lists too.

No gm would chose skinner over laine.

I'm sure you won't

The 'scoring machine' had a whopping 15 goals away from the power play last year. Fifteen.

Power play goals count the same.

You guys are really grasping.

A great chance.

It boils down to just how good Jeff Skinner really is, that Laine has to do a 180 in a lot of aspects to be that caliber of player, IMO

Edit - I guess you mean there’s a chance he’s better than Skinner
I’d say it’s a slim chance, but absolutely possible

And Laine was benched last year and relegated to the 4th line at least a couple of times due to his lack of effort/play away from the puck. He’s got great natural talent But if he doesn’t develop as an all around player he’s going to be a Hoffman not an ovechkin. Hoffman is fine, Hoffman isn’t skinner. Right now if I have to win a game I take skinner over Laine- I realize the age difference, etc but RIGHT NOW skinner is the better all around player. If Laine gets his sh&t together Laine will be the better player.....tbd. Btw any draft ranking that has him over Eichel over Dahlin I just laugh at. I’m not being a homer here, if just seems obvious. Oh and I take Dahlin over Eichel seven days a week and twice on Sunday.

But there's at least a chance Laine is better over the next 3 seasons.
- Lunaion

Better than a chance a statistical certainty given the fact players start to decrease in productivity at about 27 and Laine is about to hit his high point and that he is already a better player.

Don’t be so sure - Eichel is about to hit his prime and is an elite set up guy, if skinner continues to play with him. Plus skinner at 27 isn’t Okposo at 27 for instance. His quickness isn’t going away, he’s not a bulky type player. Think Martin St. Louis instead of Okposo or moulson. Skinner didn’t have the greatest centers feeding him the puck in carolina

So every Girgensons and Larry argument ever:

They suck at offense!

They're good at defense!

They play too much!

Because everyone else sucks at defense!

And I'm sure you wouldn't take Laine over Eichel, even though on all of those lists Laine is ahead.

No GM would take Laine over Eichel.

But keep using articles that are:
A) over a year old
B) take guys like Kopitar over kane (thus proving, and yes I mean proving, that the list shouldn't be trusted as kane is unquestionably better then guys like Kopitar)
C) are clearly just opinions, much like yours
D) I've never even said Laine is worse or better. Just find a better source please.

Well, I get your point, but the question is - or should be - who gets the contract now.
- Der Kaiser

Ideally Laine gets a bridge, maybe even a Reinhart type 2 year deal for ~50% what he's really worth. He needs a setup man, and being bounced around a lot last year showed that. I'm not even saying he needs Scheifele, if he played with Connor and Little the majority of the year he puts up bigtime numbers. He played 21.7% of his EV minutes with them, but scored 48% of his EV points with him. He's a very difficult one to nail down.

Based on age alone a GM would be a moron to pass on Laine.

Eh, what? The only thing Ovechkin did that Laine doesn't is hit people. He never played defense, and still barely does. He had tons and tons of "controller unplugged" moments in his early career.

In a vacuum, sure, but the acquisition cost and the AAV should give anyone pause. Is he actually a 18% shooter?

Over the past 3 seasons - individual scoring chances created

Jeff Skinner is 3rd to McDavid and Matthews with 651

Laine is ........84th in that time span, or low end 1st line level

Jeff Skinner is 5th among forwards in takeaways in that time span

Laine is........161st

Jeff Skinner is 5th in penalties drawn over the past 3 seasons

Laine is.....154th

People just don’t realize how good Jeff Skinner is. It’s really not surprising he scored 40 goals this year

- sbroads24

This is actually mind blowing, and I have said repeatedly, Skinner was one of our best 2 way forwards, if not the best 2 way player on the team last year

Nah, they aren’t. But you’re entitled to that opinion.

Laine is a negative impact player beyond his shooting talent.

Skinner legit has a positive on ice impact with every single player he plays with

They aren’t close to even right now

But I’m sure Laine will get better as time goes on

- sbroads24

What is this negative/positive impact metric you’re using? Is this numbers-based?

Of course, but again that’s never been the debate here.

Skinner is already signed long term
