I guess they're banking on him to be a late bloomer in terms of production. Shutdown Dman are a dime a dozen, taking them at 6th or even in the top 10 for that matter is risky. He could've traded down and got more assets and still got the guy the wanted. Broberg and York will be more offensive Dman in my opinion. - Komisaurus Rex
I don't think Seider would've still been there had Yzerman traded down. I'm not concerned about points. If Seider can be a top 4 shutdown defenseman who can provide a bit of offense then I'm happy.
He's already 6'4, 230 and skates very well. Yzerman is playing the long game here. He knows this team won't be relevant for at least another 3 years. He has to build it one piece at a time. |

The flip side is that Yzerman's first round draft history isn't very impressive. |

Vasilevskiy isn't too bad. It's Yzerman's later round gems like Kucherov and Point which built Tampa. The draft is a calculated crap shoot. You can be the fool or the genius. The good GMs try to limit the amount of times they look like fools. |

That's 8 first round picks, 3 top 10 and one top 3. Yes, the rest of the draft matters but i wouldn't have confidence in Stevy just because it's him going off the board at 6. I mean he did pick Drouin over Jones......at 3. Even though Jones was battling for #1 concensus #2 almost the entire year.
Maybe Seider does become a gem, but it's certainly not a given. |

For everyone calling for the Islanders great fall from grace, just remember how competitive Trotz kept Nashville for years when everyone counted them out. |

I never understood the Drouin pick. At least Yzerman was able to turn Drouin into Sergachev. |
