Looking back at the draft it's crazy that Florida didn't grab Caufield at 13. Now they have Spencer Knight but Bobrovsky forever? I know it's not like Spencer Knight is the starting goalie next year but when you grab a goalie at 13 I assume you want him to play sooner rather than later.

yeah I agree

I guess they couldn't be certain they were getting Bob at that point, but it seems very foolish to me as well

I know Knight is going to Boston College, he may as well do at least 3 years there now, maybe even the full 4.

Don't they lose his rights if he does all 4? That would be pretty amusing.

The last two prominent goalies I can think of taken in the first round, Price waited until year 3, Fleury played 20 games out of the gate, because of course the dumpster fire Pens of that era did. Probably a good thing for them (other than the whole Crosby thing) that season was cancelled, Fleury got to play a whole season in the A and probably got saved from being ruined.

I guess it depends on the Panthers knowledge. If they knew Knight would play 3/4 years that would make the decision sort of more stupid because then they literally could waste a 1st on him. You'd have to think he wouldn't want to sign there if he wasn't going to be the starter.

I've worn my tinfoil hat on this pick. It's a take with probably zero merit or grounds for me believing it, but it's an interesting conspiracy theory. My theory is that just like teams are giving out contracts now that are lockout proof, Florida signed Bobrovsky never planning to have him the term of the contract. They are banking on a lockout and another CBO. When Knight is ready, they will buyout Bob penalty free and hope that Bob let's them be competitive in the 2-3 years he is with them.

#TBLightning have signed D Kevin Shattenkirk to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million. Shattenkirk was recently bought out of the final two years of his contract by the NY Rangers. #GoBolts nearly acquired the 30-year-old Dman via trade with St. Louis two years ago

He becomes free to sign with whoever, it's not that he can't sign with them he just gets options.

Good signing for Tampa, Shattenkirk should fit in well playing with the Rangers.

They've wanted Kirk before, but he wouldn't sign an extension. He wanted to play for the Rangers, sadly it just didn't work out the way he had planned. instead of prodigal son returning it was oh god what did we do??!!??

Marner ain't starting the season. That's why Toronto is loading up on players they can stick on LTIR.

You don't really know that. Shatty only signing for a mil could mean he's OK with third pair minutes. Cal Foote could be the guy who's screwed though

Gotta love cap circumvention. There could be alot of people who don't start the season. Other than Trouba, none of the top D RFAs have signed either

I think Tampa will be able to get Point signed and playing this coming season fine

moving forward though, now with that crazy Vasilevskiy extension, I dont know how they are going to fit everyone in, all those forwards they have making over 5 mil a year and all of them have NTC's

Yeah but I can't say it's not creative and that I'd be upset if the Isles were in that position and utilized it.

Good for Shattenkirk, thought that might be a landing spot. Maybe he and McDonagh now get to be a pairing (kidding)

Yeah, I really can't be mad at them. I'd much rather a team do that and stay competitive than Ottawa doing the all 2009 team, getting the insurance money, just so they can get to the floor.

Yeah. To me that's much more embarrassing for the league. I don't love being able to slap people on LTIR to solve problems but it does also come with its own problems, so it's not totally unfair. I imagine that GM's won't really ever get rid of that since it's a bit of a safety net for them.
