Who would you rather have doing the bidding for your team vs the savage agents?

Part of the whole centres get more money argument for Marner's camp is that they never asked to be a winger. Marner played centre his whole life until the Leafs. So his camp would say, well, you guys decided to make me a winger, I didn't, so why should I take a pay cut?

I don't watch a single minute of junior hockey ever, but I have been lead to believe by others on here that your above statement is false.

From what I understand (feel free to correct me if I am wrong), Marner played more wing in junior than centre.

Ah. Thank you. Paul told TSN he played centre. Must have meant in minor hockey. He did some in junior but ya he's played more wing. But ultimately the point does still stand in that if the Leafs told him to train and prepare to be a centre and then make him winger he will still argue, as Paul did on TSN, that he didn't choose to be a winger. I'm not even saying it's necessarily justified, I'm just saying what their camp is saying.

Too much risk on Marner’s part. Plays in all situations & injuries are possible. A 1yr bridge makes no sense to go through it all again next year. Deferring it is to nobody’s benefit. Only 1 D Reilly is signed for next year. Resigning or rebuilding the D will be a monumental task. Nylander’s contract seems to be an inevitable target to trade or Marner cannot be around. Idk where it will lead but we all know it will be another big offseason next year.

$6.9M AAV will be one of the better values on the team when he returns to pre-holdout form.

I did a bit of further reading, and apparently he played some centre in London the year after he was drafted.

Yeah, but he was drafted by the Leafs. Only the Habs acquire wingers to play top line centre duty in the NHL.

If you are going to make false claims you will get called out. It is simple as that.

He said they should have let Ceci walk to fit Marner.

first of all he was qualified by Ottawa so that’s nearly impossible.

Secondly it’s one year...Marners is going to be more than that.

Under Bobby Clarke, the Flyers would just basically draft Canadian centres, and then figure out afterwards if they were going to play centre, wing or goalie.

They didn't even try. They could have at least let Ceci file, and then they could have walked away. The chances were very good. Remember, he saw himself as a 6 million dollar defensemen at last years arbitration.
- aminnes

Why the (frank) would Ceci do this?

Why would he want to go to UFA where he likely gets much less than 4.5?

Please understand how Qualified RFA’s work.

Hutton was not even qualified. Why? Because he sucks?

Nope, because if they did Hutton could of signed a 1 year 3 million dollar deal.

Ceci was qualified. He was signing 4.5 million at the minimum wether the Leafs liked it or not.

Marner will be a Flyer this training camp. Then the other core leaf dominoes fall. Matthews will want out of Angry Hoth Toronto and back home to Arizona where he can anonymously walk down the street and not get hypothermia, pay less taxes and experience post season success. Then he will come back to Toronto with Kessel next summer with the Cup with Larry Murphy. Tavares will simply retire in his prime, a broken man, disgusted with his choice to sign in Hogtown.Take THAT to the bank.

I love how angry Vancouver people are at Toronto.

BTW your idiot GM has screwed your cap for years overpaying average players.

Lucky they didn't have to pay them all like centres under a salary cap.

But if HE files, they can walk. Plus they could have front loaded the contract and traded him to a cap floor team. Either way, they don't have the coin to sign one of their most important players and a top 5 winger in the league. But the have one of the worst d men at 4.5.

The funniest part of all this is all the Leafs had to do was walk away from defensive disaster Codi Ceci after the hearing and they would have all kinds of flexibility.

Technically speaking, they could only walk if the arbitrator came back with a number higher than the qualifying offer.

Somebody (can't remember who, but not me) had a great idea:

If Ceci files for arbitration, the Leafs should propose a salary higher than the qualifying offer. No way in hell the arbitrator decides on a figure less than the Leafs are offering - so you 100% know you are going to be able to walk away.

True. But even now with them they are totally unbalanced. Reilly/Barrie - defensive liability. Reilly/Muzzin - good. Ceci/Barrie? Good god. They have the right handed guys now, but they are way too offensive and not near enough defensive acumen. I would also say that simply paying 4.5 million to get a righty for the sake of his right handedness is pretty dumb. Plus they traded a righty away, so if that was all it was about what was the point. Then someone will say ya but Z had 5 years left. So then work with him and trade him next year. The money was the same, so to me it looks like the whole deal was about getting 2 million in space from Brown, which still isn't enough to sign Marner anyway. Plus I have to believe Brown could have been moved for a draft pick. So it all seems like a total waste of time.

marner, 2 1sts and a 2nd for domi
- Tumbleweed

Domi is a top 5 PROVEN center in the NHL. Marner is a second line winger. The two lottery picks make it a little interesting but there is no way the Habs do this deal.

Love

There were sure fire options. What this tells me is that Dubas thinks Ceci is better than what everyone else thinks. I fail to see any upside whatsoever.

Babcock is a problem, but it's more about player usage. He doesn't put out the best lineup or play his best players enough.

People talk about Matthews getting 11.6, has anyone seen his crappy usage? His numbers are absolutely fantastic. He's the best 5 on 5 goal scorer in the NHL and not top 80 in TOI in the NHL

Someone’s an idiot, not sure it’s Babcock.

🧐

But seriously, he was getting outshot badly when they were on the ice and Nylander’s line was taking it to the other team. I know you would keep putting out AM and playing in the wrong end, but Babs was probably trying to win.
