So you're saying that the Leafs need to over pay him more than these "reported" over payment numbers?
Amazing. - GreatGigInTheSky
I am saying exactly that. If Leafs want 8 years. Marner will want well more than 11 million. He seems to want CLOSE to Matthews. Matthews is 11.5 over just FIVE years. No way Marner does 11 over EIGHT...not a chance!!!
And, if 6 years...he will want 11+....
When the contract is signed, you will see I am right. If a 5 year deal he will get 10+...my guess around 10.5
I guess we will EVENTUALLY see, but those expecting 8 years at 11 million, or 5 years at 9....you will not be happy.... |

Tavares has never been able to lead a team, we have a long history of regular and post season failure. Matthews does not seem to have the fire to lead.
I have more hope when it comes to Marner. He does appear to have some fire in his belly. - spatso
Tavares has two memorial cups and a world junior gold. Matthews led the leafs in playoff goals and points. So just stop. |

Tavares also scored the game 7 winner for the Isles the last time they won a playoff series prior to this passed season so there's that too.
Matthews led the Leafs in playoff goals scored 2 of the last 3 post seasons.
Marner had 4 points against the Bruins this spring but he's less of a choker than Tavares and Matthews.
Chokers, all of them though. |

To be fair Marner had Bergeron's line for 3x as much as Matthews did.

The funny thing about this "Leadership" thing is, the reigning Conn Smythe winner was regarded as a jinx and a guy who can't lead anyone (Ryan O'Reilly).
NHL is not the NBA. You need the supporting cast to win. |

Who has more points - Leafs vs Habs
Loser has to have the other teams avatar and profess their love of the other team in their location...until the beginning of the next season. - Garnie
That's child's play, if you guppies are so certain the Habs are this terrible team full of nobody's you'd all be clamoring to put money down on them not making the playoffs instead of running for your molehills.

I could be open to the idea that the "choke" label is less about the individual players and more about the franchise and the many years of futility it has offered up to a really good fan base.
It is discouraging. Last year the Swedish figure skater sucked all the oxygen out of the summer leading up to training camp. Now it is another contract dispute. It might make more sense if this team had actually achieved something.
I think the choke stuff begins in the front office. Nothing seems to come easy for any of these guys.

It was actually game 6 but yea saying Tavares isn't a leader is either a hater or someone who never seen him play. |

I know......
But he already said no to teams who can afford him.
He can either accept a trade to one of those teams or cave in and sign with the Leafs. - Santo_44
Let’s keep in mind that any team trading for Marner still needs to sign him. If that’s looking to be a battle no team will trade the farm to get him. So he does have some leverage on the trade options.
Why would Dubas trade him for less than face value? Getting rid of a problem? Keeping precious cap space? Marner is a gem. You don’t trade him cheap. Last I checked, there was a “m” in the middle of his last name.
So unless it is a bridge contract, which TO would really want to avoid, money will need to be spent in a big way.
My guess I’d this is going to be a 5 year term at about $10M.
It gives Marner another shot at a huge contract and the Leafs a good window to win with the current core. |

I really like Marner. He is a great talent and appears to have all the tools that will enable him to become a game breaker when everything is on the line.
Does he bring enough to help get the Leafs over the hump? The Leafs have created a culture of failure. The have a remarkable history of choking. Hard to remember the last time they won a playoff round. Clearly Tavares and Matthews are part of the softness and choking that are the Leafs. I believe Marner is different and it would be a mistake for the Leafs to let him get away.
Also think, for the same reasons, it was an error to let Kadri leave. - spatso

And it's ridiculous that Marner (moronic agent and dad) is asking that much. He's simply not worth it.
For what it's worth, my guess from a month ago for what he'll get, which is still a big over payment by the Leafs, was 6 years $10.5 per. Because Marner is NOT $2M better than Aho. |

Because you're an absolute moron and have no clue what that word means.
The Leafs didn't choke. They've faced the #1, #4, and #3 teams in the league the past 3 playoffs.
Choking is what Tampa did this past playoffs. |

And I don't disagree about the fact it may be an overpayment. BUT....I still feel he will not settle unless within spitting distance of Matthews 11.5 over 5. Maybe he signs 10.5 x 5......or 11.5 x 6. But if the $$$ per year goes below 11....his years will drop to 5, and maybe even 3 or 4 years if all he can get is 9 or 9.5.
Worth it???...different folks will have difference opinions. BUT, it IS what he will get. Either now....training camp....or into season.... |

First bolded- Then he'll be traded.
Second bolded- I doubt it. And if he does, it'll either be with a team that's not the Leafs or for only a year with the Leafs then he'll be traded. |
