That was announced at the time, I knew that we asked and were denied. I think one of the big NHL insiders said it at the time, so it was public knowledge at the time.

Of course I think it was thought here because it was "buffalo" that nobody wanted to come, but I think there is a plan for Drury in NYR organization to become GM at some point, so he is declining (I am pretty sure).

SABRES IN NO RUSH TO MAKE COST-CUTTING TRADE

THE BUFFALO NEWS: Lance Lysowski reports Buffalo Sabres general manager Jason Botterill said he doesn’t have to make a trade to become cap compliant before the start of the season. The Sabres currently sit $1.1 million over the $81.5-million salary cap. Botterill said he could place an injured defenseman (Zach Bogosian, Lawrence Pilut, Matt Hunwick) on long-term injury reserve or send a player on a one-way contract to the minors.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Botterill has plenty of options at his disposal. He could also use his second buyout window to free up some salary, though Lysowski noted the Sabres GM didn’t go that route during his first buyout opportunity in June. If Botterill goes the trade route, it could be to bolster his roster rather than becoming cap compliant.

I think that's the sense of what Botterill was saying with Andrew and Craig.

He has until October to be compliant, so he's not in a rush to make a move.

There are a lot of unknown pieces out there still (Point, Marner, Laine, Connor, Provorov, etc.) that could hinder any moves.

It seems like Botterill has a plan A, which seems to be okay with where they are now and moving a player to LTIR, or waiving someone.

Or Plan B, which is only if a deal comes across the fax that he can't say no to.

Vogl put up a best case/worst case article about every player in the 19-20 Sabres conversation. Thought this was funny.

JOHN GILMOUR

Best case: After a 20-goal season in the AHL, the defenseman keeps finding the net during training camp to edge Scandella and Matt Hunwick for a starting job on the left side.

CASEY NELSON

Best case: The 27-year-old earns the job of seventh defenseman and skates in 40 games for the first time in his five seasons.

Worst case: Nelson lands behind Ristolainen, Montour, Miller, Bogosian, Jokiharju, Borgen and Casey Fitzgerald on the right side and is a scratch for the Amerks.

John brings up another good point that has been, but not much discussed here.

ZEMGUS GIRGENSONS

Best case: The left winger again carves out a role on the fourth line and skates in 70-plus games. He reaches 20 points for the first time in five seasons.

Worst case: The Sabres decide they can get seven goals and 10 assists from C.J. Smith, Scott Wilson or Remi Elie, so they ship Girgensons and his $1.6 million salary to the Amerks.

A. If CJ Smith can't outscore Girgensons by now, you might as well cut him loose. He's 24 and will be 25 mid season.
B. Remi Elie will quadruple the 17 points Girgensons attained last year.
C. Girgensons clearly has a very specific role here, and that's to PK and.. umm.. play hard. You need CJ Smith to essentially be able to PK like ZG does in order for him to be removed from this lineup.. for CJ

Botterill mentioned CJ Smith as a possible candidate to play with Eichel, along with Olofsson.

Take that for what you will, i guess.

meh. It's nothing sauce. That's definitely a let's see what training camp looks like scenario. The best news is that Girgensons and/or Foligno is not the only option to put with Jack. Guys I expect to see with Eichel and Skinner during camp

Smith, Olofsson, Okposo (sorry), Mojo, Vesey, Thompson, Reinhart, Lazar (sorry), Ruotsalainen, Sheary, Erod

Also it sounds like both Botterill and Krueger recognize that Reinhart can absolutely drive his own line "from the wing".

I imagine the org will try very hard to find a fit not named Sam Reinhart on the top line.

85% Dzone starts last year. None of the guys mentioned can compare defensively. With a better top 3 lines, all of the work Girgs and Larry due will actually start to show. They would constantly flip the ice only to have the top lines come out and not be able to capitalize or even maintain any type of pressure.
