Just remember. RFAs are scared to death of PTOs.

That’s not what marleau said.

Should have specified fans. I read the boards and that the gist of what I read. I personally think he is the real deal and I would give him 11 mill

Why does Gardiner remind me so much of Cody Franson.

Good D-man that believed his value was sky high, and now is not signed so far into the summer and likely will get nothing close to what he thought he would get

- AlfieisKing

They are almost identical. Very mediocre actual D-men in the NHL, but analytics like Tanner drool all over them cuz they don't watch hockey, they just track numbers. The untimely give-aways, the shying away from contact, the non-compete in their own end. All mean nothing to analytic nerds.

But, they and their agents think more of themselves and sell the analytic numbers, most GMs see them play and KNOW the warts they possess.

Gardiner
Franson
Runblad

Tanner darlings who are quite useless, especially if Gardiner looking for 6 million plus. Hope Habs bite on Gardiner. Would love to see that!!!

I get why Ek does this each and every day but seriously, the content has been very weak at best the last few days. Must be August. Regardless, it does give a forum to speak our mind.

That said, it is becoming ridiculous with the game of chicken that everyone are playing. All these RFA's are just waiting for someone to sign and no one wants to go first. Let's face it, they're ALL going to get paid...but will have to be paid within the amount of cap space that teams have. I get that agents like to compare players against players but it also has a lot to do with your teammates and more specifically linemates.

Point - great talent and should get paid. Tax situation helps them.
Marner - cap space is there. If I'm him I take a short term of 3 years and then go back to the well once the cap goes up. He'll still be under the control of the Leafs by that point.
Provorov - again, just look at the team. The Flyers should really try to not screw this up.

Matthews had it right. Get it done in the middle of the season. Do you honestly think his training has any distractions this summer other than thinking about how to spend all that money?

For all the other RFA's, September is coming and there's no contracts. People tend to make a big deal about the 'missing training camp' effect. How about the no contract all summer and having that in the back of your mind while you're training.

Matthews did it RIGHT because GM handed him an incredible deal of a massive 11.5 million, for JUST 5 years...when he can enter his next contact as a UFA as early as possible. The best of both world. Huge pay, UFA at 26 or so....Geez, how could he NOT take such a sweet deal. Bet if Marner was offered 11 million for 5 years, he would have signed eons ago. But, Dumas trying to back off the Matthews type deal, knowing it was short sighted. He wants Marner for much less.....or....7-8 years if big money. Marner wants similar to Matthews.
Matthews signed in-season because the offer was super player friendly. It checked ALL the boxes for Matthews and let him test the market in just 5 years. Marners deal will take much longer, cuz no way Dumas now wants Marner getting 11 million and becoming a FA in just 5 years. Can you imagine trying to ink BOTH those guys when the rest of the league can enter the fray on equal footing (except the 7 yr vs 8 year deal). No, Dumas has to try to reign things in and the Matthews and Nylander deals are just making it harder to get Marner to come down in AVV or get enough term. I see this going into training camp, and even likely into the season. Dumas has got to draw a line to get things reeled back in.

If Matthews made it to RFA, what do you think the offers would have been. There are a couple teams that would have given him pretty much whatever he wanted and it would have been worse than 11.5 for 5 (as much as I hate that term)

RFA Auston Matthews would be scared to death of the Leafs signing PTO Mike Craig that he'd Knuckle under and sign for 5 years/$40 million.

Ek's schedule depends on his sources. If he's talking to GM's, agents, players, etc...Then they are probably busy in the morning and Ek can only connect a little later in the day. He can't schedule a daily time to publish.

He gets faxes from VERY reliable sources at all hours of the day. We would probably be shocked if we saw his fax machine paper expense.

Ek talks to high ranking league executives all day. And all night long. Including Lionel Richie.

Difference is Mathews would have likely gotten an offer sheet for similar money. I'm willing to bet Arizona would have thrown 12 million+ a year at him to come home.

So far it does not appear that a team is willing to make Marner an offer like that.
