I would think Edmunson is on the trading block before Gunny. I don't think the Blues signed Carl at a discount just to trade him before the contract begins. Eddie should have more value anyway and frees up more space to sign Barbashev and Maroon.

Ek was eating an Oh Henry when he was writing this. Innocent mistake.

But why is he so shocked about the Blues and Flames talking about Gunnarsson. Let's look at some facts:

-Gunnarsson is a 6-7-8 on the Blues depth chart
-he makes $1.75M for this year and next
-that's expensive for the role he plays, especially since the Blues would love to free up some cap space to potentially bring back Maroon for cheap
-meanwhile the Flames are actively shopping for a depth d-man after Valimaki tore his ACL

Not that earth-shattering. You really think the Blues are worried about Gunnarsson being the guy that puts the Flames over the top. They'd love to dump him and are exploiting the Flames desperation.

I don’t think it’s quite that simple with Gunnarsson. True, I doubt the Blues are worried about him going to a conference opponent, but evidently he’s been instrumental in the development of young defensemen on the team. Guys like Parayko, Dunn, and Edmundson have all credited Gunnarsson as a major contributor to their success. It’s almost like the Blues keep him around as more of a coach than a player.
