Yeah, at some point you have to set up the new core players you have rather then let the team drift hoping for better draft picks in years to come. - NuckUp
Exactly. This is where we are at. We aren't going to be picking top 10 for awhile now so wanting the team to fail for the next 5 years so we can 'stockpile first round picks' is redundant now. Fill your needs and build around the core we have. Compliment them and allow then to succeed. Now, one can't say that all FA signings will be winners or the team will finish in the top 16 but it has to be the goal right? If we are up 5 spots and still miss that's fine too. just improve. |

Can you just imagine team tank having 5 more losing seasons. Team tank can't handle losing now. 5 years from now..... man, people are going to mistake us for Oilers fans. |

That deal will play a part of that decision. I don't know a lot about Miller, I get he's a young proven NHL player but you always need to be stocking the shelves. Didn't we learn from the MG days? The only difference was when he ran the team the table for the most part was already set. - VanHockeyGuy
This team can select NHL players with the picks they keep. Gillis pretty much couldnt. Big difference.

Yes we know. Would have agreed if we were still building around the Sedins, Kesler, Burrows and Lou but the difference is now we are building around Peterrsson, Hughes, Boeser Horvat and Demko. This is a better crop of FA's attracted here now with Miller, Ferland, Myers and Benn as they see the core we have to build with now. Sure Vrbata and Venek were good signings for the most part but LE, Gagner and a few others were brutal. Is what it is. This team is finally changing post-Sedins and for the better. Players can see that too as it's all of a sudden an attractive market with top core talent. - LordHumungous

lol honestly I don't think even #teamwhiner could take 5 more years of bottom 10 finishes. At one point you'd think they'd want the team to win lol |

“It’s weird, yes,” said a veteran agent. “There’s more at stake every year because of the salary cap issues. It’s catching up with people signing players long term in this round of the CBA. The cycle is catching up with teams. And the thing is, it’s going to get worse next year.”
Alas, next year can be worried about later. The jam is real. Toronto set the market and now tries to change it (Re: Matthews, Nylander, then Marner). Jack Eichel‘s extension can be argued here as well. However, the bottom line is until someone sets the market, all anyone can do is wait.
I don't really know what they are meaning when saying that it's catching up with players long term in this round of CBA.
CBA is broken and the players aren't doing themselves any favours. League isn't helping.
I told you guys that Toronto (frank)s everything up for everyone all the time. |

They are what the rangers were pre lock out... out of control and driving the market to the next lock out.
NHL will make an example out of someone else when they have to address just how bad the circumnavigating has become. They'll find a Bernie Madoff to crucify so it don't hurt their top markets.

So the general feeling here is Miller was a costly trade. I get that. Many here are apprehensive or nervous or simply open to see how it pans out.
Seeing as a 1st rounder probably is 2yrs away from the NHL & no guarantees at that is standing pat the safe move & running the same line-up any good for progress?
At the time of the trade there was no certainty of any UFA signing here we know of. Getting Miller did it impact UFA decisions to sign here?
Our top 6 we can agree wasn’t that great. Say there was no trade & Ferland signs anyways would that have been a big enough addition on it’s own or not?
Benn i’m guessing was signing here anyways. Myers idk but probably was. What ppl already think of this roster then add those 3 but not Miller & fans would be saying what? I’m pretty certain it would be like other years that we are not a PO team & why spend cap space & not weaponize it. Adding to that fans would cite previous years of JB UFA signings & copy & paste that JB should get canned etc etc.
Myself i believe EP & Bo & the team needed better players to help progress instead of wasting a year on hope. The D we all knew sucked & had to be upgraded. So fans automagically leap at the cost of Myers but don’t want to trade from a position of weakness. In the end it’s a judgement call if the Canucks were close to real PO push or not or just another season goes by. I think a PO push is the way to go & the depth will allow the pipeline to develop better. At some point in time this was inevitable. |

Always going to be a way to get around the rules. Players salaries are pretty out of hand right now.
Problem is one guy who signed a year before is going to get less than the next guy. No perfect solution but guys who sign 6 year terms and the cap goes up 10 million dollars. They don't get any of it. Maybe the cap should work off the percent per player and as the cap moves up or down the player will get either a slight raise or less money. |

Petty envy aside & looking around the league...
Ignoring TB & FLA & VGK & there tax advantages. TB is a regular season juggernaut but if they were us the poopstorm here would be epic not winning a cup & swept in the 1st round. FLA has been a forever nobody & signs a 10m goalie poopstorm #2. VGK got an expansion deal no other team ever got.
Big market teams drawing power. NYR sign Panarin who i wanted but it wasn’t remotely realistic. The Leafs throw their wallet around & would be nowhere without a lotto win to this day.
It took the most recent cup winners many many years to get there & kudos to them & their fans.
The Jets & Preds are solid teams but nothing special without a cup.
SJ always looks good but the results wouldn’t cut it here.
Canes finally made noise & D was their main strength which is a work in progress here but getting much better.
Who does that leave? Buffalo Edmonton Arizona & any other team on the forever rebuild wasting talent away.
The old & aged teams like LA & the Ducks have many problems bigger than ours.
So where do we fit in or compare? |

Sorry, are you saying if you’re not picking in the top 10 having first round picks is a waste?
This is why you boot lickers are so dumb. You think us whiners want the team to lose so they get high draft picks, but that isn’t true at all. We want the draft picks that are given each year, and maybe a little something extra now and again, as a prospect makes the team making a vet expendable.
