Seriously? Why wouldn’t you trade a prospect who may never be an nhl regular for a guy who already is. We needed nhl talent now not 4 years from now, it’s noy like Montour is 30 years old and is over the hill. For a gm that came into the mess botts did with the complete lack of trade pieces and roster depth, the fact that he has managed to stock our prospect cupboard again, re-make the defence all in the span of two full seasons, imo is nothing short of miraculous.
People want to sh!it on the idea of a good prospect system, but that’s one of the most important facets of building a continuous winning team.
So if a gm moves from pick 22 to say pick 11 that’s a fools errand? That makes no logical sense whatsoever.

- Sabres1523

*And a first round pick.

Well for one, he's only 21(when he was traded). Victor Hedman had a whopping 23 points in his 21 year old season. Defensemen take longer. Hedman had a very good year at 23, but didn't really break out until he was 26 with 3 times the points, 2nd team All-NHL, and a Norris finalist. That's a long time for a guy to truly come into his own. I remember last offseason when everybody was saying that Guhle was already better than Ristolainen. Wha happened? Let'em marinate. I'm not saying don't trade for Montour, but trading away young, relatively highly drafted D-men isn't a great idea.

You just made my point. If we're being patient we DON'T need NHL talent now, we need it in a few years. The only reason you make that trade is to fast forward a few years which does what? Speeds things up.

And once again, I don't care about the "prospect rankings".

Yeah, sure, take 1 pick later than what I said. THAT makes no logical sense. But even still, the cost to do so is very likely not worth it.

This board comes down to

A) I'm skeptical or don't believe he's done enough
1) He's trying to tank
2) He should be on the hot seat because this is unacceptable

B) He's not done yet and people need to give him more time because of the devoid lack of depth thankyouforyourservicetimmurray left behind

Apparently talks have been ongoing and the Ducks are trying to get Buffalo to take a bad contract in return with Kase for Rsitolainen, and they discussed Ristolainen for Montour before that trade ended up being what it was.
- kingcong39

will they take Okposo or bogo then.. we can't take on anymore bad contracts this season..

Interesting

But I wouldn't want another bad contract on the books, and not to mention they are currently over the damn cap

- Stripes77

With the net money out in a Risto for Kase deal, we could take a bad contract and still get under the cap.

In recent memory, the Leafs. Also the Avs, and the Islanders, and the Flames, and the Canadiens.

Kesler or Getzlaf are their two old bad contract players to a lesser extend Patrick Eaves but he is a pending UFA after this year at a $3.1 cap hit who was waived last season

Unless the Ducks ate close to half of their celery there is no way they could take those two on even with Risto going out

Have you considered the alternative to the bolded above, which is you think Guhle is nothing and Montour will still improve, while allowing you to move Ristolainen for an impact forward, such as Ondrej Kase, for example?

If any of the players turn out to be quality that he moved up to get in the lower rounds, it was the right decision his part. The results are what matters.

You are WAY overboard with the people being on their knees comment about Botterill.

- kingcong39

Sure, and the results so far are an emphatic "meh".

I also didn't say "everyone", but people turning a blind eye to some concerning things and saying "but Tim Murray..." are definitely on their knees for a guy who has one good move to his name. People used to poop on Murray because "anyone could draft Eichel and Reinhart" well anyone could draft Dahlin, Mittelstadt was the 3rd ranked NA skater.

I did the Avs already

Montreal lives and dies with Price

Islanders drafted extremely well the last few seasons and got Lou

The Flames have a Norris winning D man and were never a bottom feeder plus Johnny G

The Leafs got that tank with integrity Matthews guys

There are other roster moves we could make to make it feasible. It doesn’t have to be a “self-contained” thing.

He has a point about how the bar seems stuck at "not tim murray"

Kesler's done. Expected to miss the entire season, and that coupled with the surgery last year as well puts his career in serious doubt.

That dude is insane. A salmon head in a freezer and the mother(frank)er thinks he's being threatened by the mob. So glad he didn't want to come here. Let the Raiders deal with his frostbitten feet, helmet fetish, and other bat poop insanery.

What is your position on mayonnaise-based salads?

There is a very short list of foods I don’t like. Mayo based salads are not something I eat regularly but they are not something I hate either. I’m mayo based salad neutral.

Thats a tricky one. I’m good with macaroni but most others are rough. Occasionally potato is ok.

Just over 2 weeks till we get to officially call cozens a bust for either not playing in the prospects challenge or not scoring more than 5 goals in it.

You can not compare guhle and Hedman, they aren’t even on the same planet, just because botts acquires nhl ready talent doesn’t mean he’s trying to fast track the rebuild, he is simply adding qualified nhl players to his roster at the expense of unproven talent, the reason you make that trade is to get better, mountour>guhle.
Also I could also care less about some random prospect rankings, but it is very important to build a solid group of young players to replace vets on the big club.
I’m not sure what the last part of your post is about, I literally just took two random picks to illustrate why it’s good to trade up even outside the top 10.

Lol Colorado and New Jersey, so what I named two, don’t like it I’ll be on first and first wearing a stove pipe Sabres hat tough guy.
- Sabres1523

Colorado conference finish since '08-'09: 15, 8, 14, 11, 15, 2, 11, 9, 14, 8, 8.

That's not the kind of turn around I'm interested in, and I don't think GMJB is, either.

NJ conference finish since '08-'09: 1, 1, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 5, 8.

Two issues with this example: (1) NJ has never been at the nadir the Sabres were at the last few seasons and (2) what turnaround? Going from 8th to 5th to 8th is just going in a circle. Otherwise we're just looking at an extremely steady decline.

I think the point was what teams turned around in a year, both NJ and COL finished last and then made the playoffs the following year.
