It was very clear from the beginning that a 5y deal at 11mln+ was a bad contract for the Leafs.. should have been 5y at 9.5mln or 8y at 11.5-12mln.
Dubas created a problem by signing Matthews to the most player-friendly contract in the league - now it's not strange Marner wants something very similar.
Dubas by giving in to Nylander last minute last season gave away a lot of his leverage while discussing new deals with other players..

Ya, and especially this year Lucas because we have a weird situation here. There are FOUR guys who should be around the same AAV. Marner, Point, rantenan, Tkatchuk. ALL great young players and ALL hoping to hit the 10 million or so number, maybe even a bit higher.
But, it is held up because of a 2nd set of circumstances.
Word has it that Marner would like in the Matthews range. The other 3 LOVE this, and their agents are telling them to hang tight. They all want Marnet to set the bar, because he can use the Matthews contract as a measuring tool and request something similar (maybe lower, but he would love the 5 year deal and likely want 10 or 10,5 for those years).
Marner is the logical one to set the bar because....Rantanen has McInnon dragging him down, as Colorado can argue the 6 million MacInnon makes means that Rantanen shouldn't make much more. Tkatchuk is on Calgary. They don't want to pay, can't afford to pay, and want to low ball Tkatchuk as much as possible. And, Point is with Tampa, he will sign for slightly under Marner's number I would guess...because of the Tax situation.
Now, I am not saying any of that is valid....just that the other agents want Marners contract to HELP them get more on theirs. In fact, IMO all 4 SHOULD get around 6 years at 8-9 each and all 4 teams would not be too upset. But, that is not how it will work. All will hang tight until mARNER SIGNS THE BOTTOM LINE....AND THE OTHER 3 WILL...oops...damn cap-lock...sign within a week or two, if not days.
The Matthews 5 year-11.5 is the main reason all is held up. Marner wants close. Leafs want 10 or 11 over 8 years (Too long for Marner)...or 8-9 over 4-5 years (not enuf $$$ for Marner. So.....we are stuck here for now. - hawk35
Let him sit, Marner shouldn't get Matthews type money... Cause, he's not as good as Matthews

also Matthews would be without a contract right now if they only offered 9.5.
Nylander was right at the value he was worth. Leafs didnt get a deal, but its not an overpay.
They also didnt cave to get him in the home opener they held out also |

yes he caved.
not $ wise (although the caphit in year 1 had a negative impact on the Leafs ability to add any players at trade deadline) but he should have just sat him out or traded him.
he didn't do either - so he caved. |

So, he caved to Nylander because, he signed him instead of trading him? |

How many teams would take Nylander at 6.9M?
I'd say most of them. |

Every single one.
Some people let their emotions get the best of them on players.

Nylander will be one of the best value contracts on the Leafs.
The best part is we won't have to look through poop to find the people whining about him this summer. The same people have been whining every blog. |

For the 1,000,001st time.. Dubas didn't cave on the Nylander deal. - PatC80
From an October 2018 MiB blog:
https://hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=95138
The continuing saga of contract negotiations between the Maple Leafs and William Nylander does not seem to be getting anywhere closer to getting resolved. TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on Thursday that there has been little movement off an $8 Million-plus AAV from the Nylander camp’s on a long-term deal, an amount that is anywhere from $1.5 to $2 Million more per season than the Leafs are looking to sign the 22-year-old for.
Leafs GM Kyle Dubas is not seriously contemplating any trade options for Nylander, since his value is mitigated by his current status as an unsigned restricted free agent, but if the impasse continues into the season and the compromise is a two-or-three bridge deal, that likely would be the first step towards the winger’s eventual departure from Toronto.
Dubas is reportedly looking for a long term deal of six-or-more years in the $6 to $6.5 Million range, which would be a friendly number for the Leafs on the salary cap (in the same range as veteran Patrick Marleau), that would allow Toronto room to sign Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews on long term deals.
