It is August 20th....

Gardiner is definitively wanting to come back to the Leafs.

Dubas is holding Jake hostage for Marner.

- Santo_44

Or most likely teams arent super interested and are probably gonna wait closer to camp to sign the goofy bastard and others on the cheap

I just think its strange a player of his caliber is waiting this long to sign a deal.

And he is also staying very quiet....

Ceci is not untouchable.

- Santo_44

Again...im not sure hes waiting by choice.

I highly doubt that.

He is a top 4 D in an era where he fits the mold.

Even if you are one of those who think the Leafs have too many players like him...There are a bunch of teams that could really use him.

MTL is one of them.

To me it is pretty obvious.

I know there are plenty of Gardiner haterz out there, and I also know that some of their hate is justified.

But the fact that Gardiner isn't signed yet - or that there hasn't even been any chatter about him - is definitely weird.

keep telling yourself he'll have a great season.
if not 2019-2020, maybe the 2020-2021 will be great for him?

- MaximusAurelius

If he gets 60 - 70pts.
Its a good season and a good contract

You could be right.

I just am doubting that very much. He is a very talented D.

There were rumors of a bunch of interest in the UFA talking period.

He isn't saying a word.

The rumors suggests he loves being a Leaf.

A lot of points suggest he is waiting on Marner.

Leafs must have some things going on in the background, supposedly he still wants to be a Leaf and is waiting. Not sure who would take Ceci, unless we’re trading another high pick/prospect with him.

Yep.

He is a top 4 D that is unsigned in late August...Something is fishy.

There's probably 30+ forwards on contracts with lower AAV that I'd rather have on my team than Nylander. He's really a meh player that can add some points when on the PP and with Matthews - but he's definitely not a gamechanger and Leafs can use the 7mln in caphit in better ways in my opinion.

There are 31 GMs out there.

Dorian gave him 4.3 million 2 years ago. There is a real possibility some teams see value in him.

If not there are other options...Arizona still owes Hossa 2 million dollars to sit on his arse.

Of course it is.
He scores points but makes horrendous defensive gaps with a wonky back.
Teams may not want spend on term or too high a price for that.
Teams could also be waiting on details of his recovery.
Not much space for him on the leafs once marner is signed. Unless a move is made or hes willing to 1m or under

there's only one crazy GM that thinks he can play.
that GM has glasses and thinks he knows better than all other GMs in league.

Why has everyone accepted the narrative that everyone is waiting for Marner to sign?

I mean, I know we are the centre of the hockey universe and all, but Brayden Point is a kinda good hockey player.

- Atomic Wedgie

That's how it looks right now is all. I absolutely don't know the truth. it simply looks that way.

He helps a team in a top 4 role.

That really is all that needs to be said.

Myers was given 6 million with his shortcomings.

There are 31 GMs in this league with different opinions. Chances are there are quite a few GMs that would love to have him and would sign him in a heartbeat.

What points suggest hes waiting on marner?
He may be and there may be a deal in place but what points are there to point to that?
Outside of an assumption?

Rumors for one thing that have said he is waiting on Marner.

It is August and its very out of the ordinary for a talent of his caliber to be unsigned.

Also it is pretty silent on his front...Like AW said that is very fishy.

Like you said we know he likes the Leafs. He should have a contract signed at this point but he doesn't...Dubas can't do much until he knows how much Marner is signing for...hmm so what is the hold up Jake?

There is a strong possibility he is holding out for the Leafs. I could be wrong but signs point to this being the most likely scenario.

Highly unlikely.

31 management groups don't want a player that helps out a top 4?

You can be a Gardiner hater all you want but all 31 GMs don't all share your opinion.

But hey, lets bet. If you are right and no one wants him he will get like 1 million. Wanna bet that he gets more?

The thing is - aside from the fact that no one wants Ceci, he was literally the best RHD they could get of the options available (this is in no way an endorsement of Ceci). Babcock was quite vocal that his problems were an inability of management to give him top 4 RHD. There's no way he didn't have a voice in this. Ceci is the rope. Babcock is either going to hang himself or prove himself.

As much as we can dislike Burke, he once made a good comment (to me anyway) about firing a coach. As a GM, you can't dictate to the coach how to play or who to play, or else you have no right to fire the coach. Your job, providing you can philosophically work together, is to work with the coach and give the coach what they want so that they can do their job to the best. If what they want doesn't meet expectations, then you need a new coach who can deliver upon those promises.

It's really no different than any business on the surface. "I will deliver my target of x, but I will need a, b, c to do so." If you are given a, b, c and fail to deliver on your promises then you're gone.

I submit an alternate, somewhat simpler reason that Gardiner remains unsigned...
he (frank)ing sucks!

Ceci is not a top4 RHD.
Barrie is.

Ceci will barely make the team, let alone the lineup.
