Rick you may not have heard of York University, let's just say, it's not exactly Ivy League or in the class of those fancy schools in the Boston area. Ferris "attended" York University - I choose to interpret this as he flunked out and did not complete

The father is a different matter. I believe he is trying to live his childhood dream vicariously through Mitch. AKA small d!ck syndrome. - winsix Sure sounds like it, huh?
As for the father, I totally agree.
One other thing, I’m not Rick! But #FreeAhjay

When fully grown yeah, and mens/beer leagues.
Growing up and constantly needing new equipment due to growing. While playing rep is real expensive. All the travelling, hotels for tourneys, etc.. it's like 15k a year (one kid).
I grew up in a family with 4 of us playing rep hockey, the amount my parents spent each year was completely insane. - LeafGuy89
We were talking about kids so this is more the angle I was trying to get at. |

I always chuckle at parents who say they are doing it so that their kid can get a scholarship.
When you add up the fees, extra practice sessions, summer camps, hotels, endless terrible meals at Boston Pizza and East Side Mario's, etc., you'd be waaaaaaay better off (financially) not putting your kid in hockey, and instead just taking that money and putting it in an RESP.
The way we run hockey for kids in Canada is criminally insane.
But you aren't allowed to criticize, because hey, we win championships, and blah blah blah.
The ugly little secret that nobody wants to talk about is just how under-represented the GTHL is in the NHL.
You'd think with all the resources and time that kids in the GTHL invest, there would be a payoff at the NHL level. Nope. Statistically speaking, waaaaaaaay under-represented. |

Yup, 8k up front if your kid makes our local Triple A Midget team. Doesnt count hotels, travel, etc.. just the starting payment |

Starting hockey is
But equipment lasts a long time. I probably invest 15-20$ a year on average into my equipment. Plus a few sharpenings.
400-500$ to play hockey once a week for 20-25 weeks? Easy decision over golf. - Santo_44

Yup.
I see golf dying a bit in the next generation.
Young Canadians are all in debt. A round of golf for 100$ plus beer? (frank) that.
Play hockey for 15$ a game. - Santo_44

I was addicted to golf in the nineties and if I could turn the clock back I never would have played. It’s a selfish game that takes you away from your family on weekends and holidays.
When you have kids you regret not spending more time with them instead of spending the day cursing and swearing with your golf buddies.
Not to mention the time spent at the nineteenth hole. - shack67
I go a few times a year mainly just to hang out with some friends who golf 24/7 on the weekends so I can finally hangout with them So your theory is true.

The only good piece of equipment worth having is a stick.
Even gloves...I bought a 35$ pair 8 years ago and they have worn in to the point that no 100$ pair could feel as good.
Also nothing is made to last anymore these days. Any new equipment you buy will last a few years and thats it. |

I am saying the kids of today won't be playing golf when they are 30. |

Remember when you would get your gloves re-palmed?
Good times.
I'll spend a lot of money on skates and a helmet. I'll spend a moderate amount on gloves.
Everything else? I'm trolling bargain bins. |

The game can be so addictive. I used to see my family doctor on the course and I mentioned it to him at an appointment that I had.
He told me the last thing he thinks about before he drifts off to sleep every night is his backswing. |

I'm the exact opposite - I can always putt, but the rest of the game dies if I don't play regularly.
My clubs are now probably 20 years old, and it's now a catch-22: I don't play enough to justify buying new clubs, and I don't want to play without new clubs... - Atomic Wedgie

Skates for sure.
And funny thing about helmets...if you talk to any concussion specialists...there really is barely a difference from a 60$ helmet to a 200$ helmet. Obviously the more expensive one will be more comfortable but it’s barely making it any safer.
Helmets protect you from serious injuries not concussions.
I just know this because a friend of mine went though PCS and after a year of going through specialist after specialist it’s what they all told him.
The really expensive ones just aren’t worth the price but companies are really taking advantage of the concussion scares. |
